i think wot started as a constructive discussion is finally loosing its steam.i believe the whole crux of this discussion is now changing lanes as to who is the most commercially successful director in malayalam.i suppose that has been the curse that has befallen malayalam industry for some time now.all our creative energy has been concentrated into making a successful film rather a really good film.but believe me it is not always that its a good film that transpires into a successful venture.there have been classical examples of it on both sides of the river i would like to be not drawn into references.but wot i strongly believe is that we the audiences of malayalam cinema can no longer be called the connosieurs of good cinema.i could say that we held that title till a few years back.but sadly enough we have lost it in the past 10 yrs or so.
wot deeply moves me is our definition of a commercial and art film.if u observe the trend of our films in the past few yrs u would notice that we have lost something that was so ours.that essential "malayalittvam" in our films.u just compare the light hearted movies that we have once basked in the glory of to the ones we r now making.i believe that "vadakkunokkiyantram" is 1 of the best movies i have seen to date.if u observe closely the screenplay of the movie,we understand that sreenivasan never really tried to make a laugh-a-second movie.the humour is so natural.so much wot we can call ours.also there's never been a need for him to overstate things.things were so understated.the emotions in films like bharatham, kireedom, kamaladalam were so understated.did that make them any less effective movies?hell no.i am sure if bharatham was to be made today there would be a section of people who call it an "art film".its becos now we want things to be obvious.we r not ready to use our acumens to decipher something thats deep inside.i am not being spiritual but the expressions just emanated out of the condition i see the malayalam industry i see today in.
all i would like to say is that i am a malayali who has been settled in mumbai for the last 17 yrs and previously the summer vacations to kerala meant for me a chance to feast at movies that had a distinct identity to them, something that was so differnt from wot i saw here for all the rest of the 10 months of the year.but sadly today its just a feeling that i have left mumbai but visited a "pseudo-mumbai" some 100's of kms away.

hari,
ur concern abt the quality of malyalam cinema, i think is right. But i won't agree that quality malayalam cinema's are not created now a days. good cinemas are created but the number is very less. in a year , u can't find more than 3 or 4.

Jo,
Kamal films, u listed above are hits or super hits. there are other kamal films which won't lie in these category, but to say all are flops . (Megha Malhar, Gramaphone etc). since the people like these movies he is using this as the commercial element. He himself told this in one of his interview. audience always needs a twist in the story. Other directors will be using some other thing for the twist .
So firstly the malayalam film audience can grow up and if they can make any of these films a flop, he will stop killing the characters.

hari,
one more point in why good cinemas are not created ? is the production cost. No director will take a risk now . The number of audience seeing the cinema is decreasing day by day and the cost of production is increasing. So who will take a risk film..?? no one will be interested.
very few directors are taking risks. sathyan won't take risk no more . After devadoothan i don't think sibi will take a risk. fazil is taking risk now a days but how long will he take ..?? kamal is taking a nuetral stand.
And in the writing section we are lucky that no writer is currently there in malayalam cinema.

hari,
Now only i noticed ur comment abt malayalam film audience. I agree to the comment that quality film audience are disappearing.
I think more than 80% of the audience are coming to the theatre for 2.5 hrs entertainment. And there are mimicry films to satisfy
their taste.
The most dangerous thing what i feel abt these audience is, if they are not getting the entertainment they expected , they will start disturbing other audiences by making noices.
what i can say to these audiences is, if u are not enjoying the cinema , u have the right to leave the theatre . Why disturbing others ..??
I now remember, once sathyan told abt his experience on watching "Lagaan" from thrissur. He saw that film from chennai and he can feel a decent crowd there , who is enjoying every bit of silence in the film.
The same film when he saw from thrissur, he saw a worst crowd who is making irritating noises, and was not able to enjoy that film .
due to the "quality" audience we are having, we are now able to see GOOD cinema. The cinemas coming to the theatres now are created with a lot of MANUALLY created pace in the screen play, and i feel that the audience are happy with it.
