The Malayalam cine industry is facing a bothersome situation nowadays. Please let me scribble something from my point of view. The major reason of this crisis is the lack of good stories that is not proportionate with our culture, tradition and age. There are no any creative writers especially in the new generation. I don’t see anyone currently literate something in Malayalam those who are under the age of 40. Most likely the reason behind this might be the study in English Medium Schools (I am not blaming English education) as well as our Education System. I mean there is only a slight opportunity to study Malayalam with out losing the strength of our vernacular. I believe, the languages and literature of Sanskrit, Malayalam, English and Hindi should also be included in the syllabus since preliminary stages.
Even now we have certain creative directors, actors, and other technicians are existing in the field. But the only deficiency is for story/script/dialogue writers. In my opinion we will not be able to conquer this situation in the near future.
The second reason is the lack of capable producers. First, the producer should be able to understand the trend of the public. When the producer is selecting his team to make a movie, obviously the team should be competent. Otherwise the effort will be a flop.
The most awful thing I understood from the recent developments is that our film workers does not realize the appropriate reason for the dangerous circumstances yet. What do you guys say? Thank you for your intellectual thought.

As far as scripts..
Except for few directors like Kamal, directors seemed to be frightened on touching innovative themes.
Main directors like Shaji Kailas,Fazil,Joshi,Priyan,Viji
Thampi etc. select themes for A&B Grade Actors which are typically either "one man show" or a hilarious comedy with family sentiments.
All the hit directors of today like Thaha,Rafi Mecartin,Rajasenan, rely on comedy based movies .They can only make innovations within their comedy subjects.
I feel Tamil films are coming out with some good themes these days inspite of it's limitations.
And the taste of we Malayalees have changed a lot .We go to theatres only to enjoy for a couple of hours. THe days of Nagatshathangal,Panchaagni,Sargam,Perunthachan ,I think may never come back.
I dont think scripts based on Novels or literature would click anymore commercially.
Directors like Mohan,Hariharan,MT Vasudevan nair,KG George all are waiting, expecting their days would come again.
I think the viewers and the invasion of channels are to be blamed.
IMHO Innovative script writing does not involve language as a main criteria. But sure for sharp dialogues what Sree has told is right.
THe best thing happened recently in Malayalam cinema, I think is the ,wash out of the "alive but dead"so called "art movies".
Directors like Jayaraj,TK Rajiv Kumar and Shaji N Karun atleast make understandable movies .

There is another equally stifling issue before the industry: a very small market.
Malayalam movie industry should think of widening this market beyond Kerala and video cassettes/CDs market.
It's not such a big deal. Because there are quite a few regions that can boast of a sizeable malayali population. For instance, take any big Indian city. In most of these cities, people have to wait for that infrequent Sunday morning show to watch a new Malayalam movie. Very rarely do theatres have more shows of malayalam movie. And this incovenient timing is one reason people don't throng theatres.
If they are serious, the industry's associations can probably talk to one or two theatres in each of these cities and convince them to have more shows.
Or probably they can rent out some theatres themselves and show malayalam movies. To collect funds for these ventures, all they would have to do is organize some star shows in each city and raise funds. But then they should also take care that these theatres do not start exhibiting shakeela movies.
I seriously think that the industry should do something like this to market itself more.

It might help them to think like corporates who want to market their products. Reach out to more of their audience, spread the image of an industry that creates top quality movies (they have that respect to an extent) and gradually attract other audiences too. Of course, all this is easier said than done. Pakshay nammude vicharichal nadakkavunnadey ullu. They can get the ubiquitous malayali associations to help them.
