I have a database of over 7000 ragas. New ragas are devised continually.

Giridhar: Ancient Tamils calculated the number of possible ragas using the seven notes to be 11991 (from Silappadikaram). Palaiyazhi lists about 3000. Ragapravaham lists about 5000. People will 'invent' new ragas and will be disputed and debated as in the case of Balamuralikrishna's new ragas! In recent times Harikesanalur Muthaiyah Bhagavathar seems to have defined a number of new ragas.
