The contribution of Kerala to the classical music has been remarkable. Taking only the well known names one can list Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar,Alattor brothers , Palakkad Narayanaswamy, Palghat Mani Iyer, M.S.Gopalakrishnan , Jesudas, Unnikrishnan, Gurvayur Dorai, Ayilore Krishnan, Bombay Sisters and so on and on. Is there a list were such personalities are listed. Why is it that Karala with its peculiar culture has contributed to so much.

The Music Academy has now become fully commercialised and highly reputed vidwans are not even considered for concerts in the academy. Now Music Academy is the best place to watch BANNER DISPLAY exhibition .I know that the reputed Mridanga Vidwan TRIVANDRUM BALASUBRAMONIAM who has been serving the cause of carnatic music and has accompanied great stalwarts and have been recognized by the western musicians are not invited to participate in concerts during the Music academy season . Senior Vidwans have started declining Sangita Kalanidhi title since they are not honoured at the approporiate time . To my knowledge Lalgudi Jayarman declined the Title. But at the same time Krishna Gana Sabha of Chennai had given award to Lalgudi. There are lots of internal clashes among Chennai based organisations . AMONG MUSIC SABHAS regionalism plays a great role. The Vidwans from Channai are paid high honorarium when they perfrom in Kerala . But at the same time the Kerala artists are not at all invited by the Sabhas. The GREAT TALENTS IN THE MUSIC FIELD are in Kerala no doubt . The CHENNAI big bosses should realize and open their eyes.

Nado:
what is that roar of life-breath concept ? I always that vocal chords were in throat and that sound has rarely anything to do with "nabhi" (though it is a wide spread conception that singers should sing from "nabhi").

The chords may be in the throat but the air that passes over them is expelled via plexus and lungs. You would do well to listen to more of the classical artistes, as you get more familiar with some of these ideas. Vocalists often perform singing exercises to improve their lung capacity. Sometimes these are done submerged in tanks.

agreed on your inference about lung capacity and breath control. It comes with practice only. But how does it affect the tonal quality ? The tonal quality is defined only by the control of throat. One can sing in either full thorated or suppressed modes. Probably the nabhi concept you are referring to is the full throated singing. And what do you exactly mean by pretenders ?

I think TKG's book ( TK Govinda Rao's book ) might organize this. probably also the older texts of Veena KSI. Some of these groups appear in the Old responses of the MD thread, posted by PPN and Narayanan, among others.

Why is GENDER BIAS prevalent in carnatic music?
This gives a primitive look to the CARANATIC MUSIC ART.
Female Violinists of high caliber like Narmada (d/o MSG), Bangalore Dr. Jyotsna Srikanth,
Bombay Gayatri, Bombay Ranjani etc are in no way less talented to their male (violinist)
counterparts.
Upcoming artists like TNS Krishna, Unnikrishna, Sanjay Subramanyam etc.,
Who are still in their initial decades of their performing careers have already picked
up these (wrong) clues/samskaarams from their Gurus/Parents.
Its better that these civilized artistes read torchbearers know that they were borne by a lady even before they were born. Let them not continue this hypocritical legacy of what I call as a
Karaikudi-Mani-Iyer-Legacy of not sharing the dais with a female.
God knows the funda of this philosophy. Let them also then say that they would not
perform for lady audience. Oops! Then their career is at stake.
This country which boasts of a rich culture, implicitly meaning that we treat ladies
like mothers & daughters, now has artist who do not take female artists for accompaniment.
I suggest we should take legal actions against gender-biasing-artists who are the
torchbearers of this nation's cultural heritage.
ANY TAKERS?
