Commercial FM Radio seems to be catching on in India. The following is an excerpt
from an article from Asiaweek.

For STAR Group Ltd. in India, July 3 is becoming an auspicious date. Last year, it marked the birth of the Indian version of the popular American game show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Anxious executives rejoiced as the program's ratings soared, catapulting STAR into the stratosphere of Indian satellite television. This year July 3 marked the launch of another potential hit: India's first private radio station, STAR's Radio City FM91, crackled to life across the airwaves of the country's high-tech capital, Bangalore.

They are also going all out to impress listeners — the industry's power source. At STAR's Radio City FM91, English-speaking DJs have been spicing up air time with Hindi songs popular in south India. The early response has been encouraging. When the station ran a contest asking listeners for their favorite tunes, callers jammed its phone lines with more than 20,000 entries in just three days. The prize was — what else? — a new radio. The response pleased STAR executives, who are already celebrating their latest creation. Who knows? For them, maybe Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? isn't just the title of a TV show anymore — it could very well be STAR Radio's corporate slogan.

If a language has to become popular and widespread, it needs to build cultural capital in all popular modes of transmission from books to radio to television. In light of this, when will we see Commercial FM Radio in Tamizh in Tamil Nadu?
