Didn't find any there. Only a link to 'ewebsite.com', with useless ads. Searching that site found no results. (i.e. False link. Website doesn't seem to exist)

We very often talk about MP3 in this forum. What is an MP3? I came across an interesting article recently which talks about the origin of MP3. I am forwarding it for the interest of the hubbers.
"These days MP3 is another household word like tape and CD. It has become music to those who seek low cost or no cost music, and scary to the music industry. MP3 is in fact an acronym for Moving Picture (Expert Group Level) 3 (compression). and its beginnings were modest.
The story starts in the early 80s when a German student, Karlheiz Brandenburg wished to send music down a phone line. During his doctoral studies at Fraunhofer Institute in Germany. he worked on the topic of MP3 and in 1986 had his first breakthrough. In july 1988, BB presented MP3's predecessor format to the public for the first time. In 1993 when the idea to make MP3 better known struck him, BB made the software tools free for anyone to down load.
In an interview in 2000, BB said "Back then I thought my thesis had everything from a dust collector in univ. libraries to the global standard
3. Then though, it was more of a dream, now it has actually come true." He knew that MP3 would be succesful,' but by no means could imagine the degree of it'.
There are several benefits to using the MP3 file format including a high compression rate. This is excellent for internet d/l times. The quality of MP3 files is also superior to most other file formats like realaudio, especially for their compression rates.
Human ear cannot hear very quiet sounds, and also loud ones that are masked by even louder sounds. With MP3 an ear model is calculated to cover every 24 milliseconds that tell which signals are heard. Thus the entire range of hearing is divided into 576 different frequencies and a distinction is made between what can be left out when encoding, and what can be kept in with slight errors. The remaining signal is changed and coded until it fits the settings. To further improve the codec, listening tests are conducted using trained listeners like music students.
BB had imagined that his invention could be useful to millions of people and MP3 did become useful, but perhaps not in the way he would have wanted it to. Today there are alot of legal issues and media hype surrounding MP3 and its use in pirated music.
In a recent interview with BBC, BB said: " People should have easier access to music. They should be able to listen to it whereever they are and still pay for it. My sympathy is always with the artistes and even with record labels. They should get paid for the work they do. I don't like the Napster idea that all music should be free to everybody."
In tandem, he suggested that " the record labels need to look at ways of using the technology, rather than fighting it", " There are so many new opportunities for the music industry if they catch on and use the technology" he pointed out."

It was a very interesting insight by Sri Balakrishnan into the details of MP3, the much talked about format here.
It is very true, MP3 is here is to stay. It can not be eiminated. the record labels should make use of it. the main problem the western labels are facing today is piracy and this happens mostly in MP3 format. But why do people do that? simply because 1) the CDs are too expensive (about £15/-) 2) you get songs that you might not be interested in.
The record lablels should start selling songs in MP3 format on the web and give the consumer the choice of mix and match. And of course the bottom-line would be prices. the prices have to come down for the system to work. My friend recently bought an MP3 player which is of the size of a small match box but can store up to 2000 songs. This can potentially be plugged to bigger devices like car stereos and bed-side hifis. Bascially what it means is you can do away with the whole racks and racks of cds and tapes and bung them all into an extremely small device. You can carry your entire collection all the time, in your pocket !! MP3 players have loads of features like for example, creation of playlists - you can create a playlist of say all the compositions in a particular raaga or by a singer and so on. Mp3 will succeed big time very shortly... you can already get a very decent one for under £200/-
