General Music Questions

I hope this is not an inappropriate post. I am new to the study of Indian classical music and I have a couple of questions (the first of many I am sure).
I am aware that a raga is a complex melding of scale, dominant notes and key phrases. Nonetheless as I listen I find it hard to pick up the key identifying phrases or the vadi/samvadi without any pointers. Is there anywhere I can get this kind of background on a raga (like hearing the arohana/avarohana) before I listen to it seriously?
My second question is simpler, I hope. I have a recording named Raga Kafi, and another named Mishra Kafi. What does Mishra signify, and what differences should I listen for?
My apologies if I am at the wrong place for asking such questions.
Kind regards
Jerry

1) Try www.ragain2001easysteps.com
2) Mishra means "I wish you were here" as in "I really Mishra"
Hope this helps

Mishra means that some notes that are normally not in the scale of a given raga are used for either embellishment or to give it a different flavour or nuance. Examples are mishra kafi, mishra pilu, mishra shivaranjani etc.
The best way, in my opinion, to understand the usage of the vadi samvadi notes is to keep listening to the compositions and learn by experience (unless you have a teacher). Books like Raganidhi by B.Subba Rao or books by Bhatkande will give you information on the vadi/samvadi svaras for each raga.

Mari; if you google for "Somebody Like You" you will find the name Keith Urban. Doesn't mean anything to me.
People looking for lyrics, singers etc of British and American popular (?) music will find google usually gives them what they want
Now please excuse me taking the Country Music CD off and going back to some nice Carnatic music ;-)
