hello everyone,
i have a concert by TVS where he has sung 'Balasubramanya Paadhame Thunai' in this ragam. does anyone have more information about this ragam or this composition? also, if anyone has the lyrics for this song, that would be great.
if anyone is interested in a copy of this concert, or any others, feel free to email me.
thanks/Prashant

In a concert by TVS at IIT-M? in the mid-80's with MSG and USivaraman , TVS actually explained this raaga and kriti before singing it. The composer T.SankaraI. was in the audience it seems. There was a pretty elaborate 'Enduku' S'bharana before it etc.

Prashant:
The song Balasubramayan padame tunai is a composition of Tanjavur Shankara Iyer. Vishnupriya is a janya of mela 32 Ragavardhini and uses the following notes: S G M P D N S; S N D P M R S. If you already have the concert, you should be able to figure out the lyrics by yourself. By the way the song is also available on AVM cassette # 45B 1235/1236 by TVS.

It would be interesting to find out if this kriti was around during MMI's time or if MMI ever rendered it. Seems doubtful. TVS also performs 'Gitavadya' in Natakapriya of TSI once in a while.

The song was very likely not around during MMI's time. My mother had the fortune of learning this kriti from Sankara Iyer himself; it was probably composed after MMI passed away. In fact, it was Sankara Iyer who "created" the raga.

Does TSI have other krities in this raga Vishnupriya ? perhaps in different talas.
The only other kriti that is reasonably widespread in Ragavardhani janyas is the ShwetaGanapatim of MD. MD also hasn't bothered with any more krities in Ragachudamani other than the one.
