Being a 14 year old mridangist, I never had the oppurtunity to see the great Palghat Mani Iyer, nor anyother stalwart of the golden era. I have heard of 3 video tapes that are available of Mani Iyer and am eager to see any of them. If anyone has further information on the topic, please contact me. Thank You.

Hi Rohan,
Have you heard him play? Not just the Carnatic concerts, but the fusion (i hate that word) albums he did with L Shankar and Zakir Husain. Man, they are magnificent. Especially one album where Shankar and John McLaughlin play the strings, while Zakir and Mani Iyer take care of percussion. Recorded live at South Hampton College. Out of the world stuff.

Oh, I have heard many many concerts of his, not live of course. But I want to see him play! The only method to do so is by video tape. If you have any further info on that... please let me know.

Cram,
I just happened to see your post now (I've stopped visiting forumhub frequently due to some technical reasons). Is the said album available in India? I would like to get that.
Thanks

Dear Siby,
I think the Thani (solo) of that concert is available online. It should be on the Palghat Mani Iyer homepage, audio section.

cram,
I doubt if John Mclaughlin played with Palghat Mani Iyer at the percussion. The recording at South Hampton College you refer to seems to be a concert performed by "Shakti" in the period 1975-1977, their first in fact, in which the mridangam was played by a R.Raghavan. Zakir was a part of the band too.

I also doubt that Mani Iyer played with Mclaughlin. I have heard him with Zakir and L.Shankar, but I do not know if there was anyone else with them. The mridnagist you are mentioning in Shakthi is Ramnad Raghavan, a senior well known mridnagist who lived in the USA but moved back to India recently.

Rohan,
Is the album available for purchase in India?
VJ,
Glad to see you after a long period. BTW, did you get the album I sugested--'Sreeyesukeertanam' by George Panjara?

I studied mrdangam with Ramnad Raghavan many years ago and vocal with his brother, Ramnad Krishnan. Does anyone have Raghavan's address? He used to live in Mylapore. Jim McConaughy

There is supposed to be an old and rare movie called Vani. It stared Chowdiah and showed a song with Chowdiah, Chembai and Mani Iyer. I doubt that it is available at all. Also there is a movie called Mridanga Chakravartha that has U.K.Sivaraman in it. I'm trying to find that one.

As a matter of fact, Sri. Ramnad Raghuvan attended one of my concerts in India last December. I believe he lives somewhere near Mylapore, but I am not sure of the exact location. I knew him fairly well, I even took some private mridangam classes with him a few summers back in his Wesleyan College office.
Mridanga Charkravthi had Sri. UKS AND my guru Sri. Guruvayur Dorai as the mridangists. However, I have not seen the film myself. I am not sure copies are even available today.

I am Rajamani, the eldest son of Palghat Mani Iyer. I am myself a mridangist. Though I am an Engineer by profession, I have a sound knowledge about mridangam playing. I have a fairly good collection of the audio tapes of my father. They are in spool tapes. May be around 200 concerts. I have some video tapes too. I am trying to get the clipping from the Kannada picture VANI in whivh there is a concert by Chembai - Choediah and Mani Iyer. I am yet to succeed in my attempt. If anyone is in possession of the same, I would very much like to have a copy.

Hello Sri. T.R.Rajamani Sir, it is wonderful to see your post here.
I am looking for more videos of Palghat Mani Iyer Sir. I have seen one with Alathur/Lalgudi by DD, but the copy I saw was very poor. There is a very nice recording, however, by two American students from California, shot in 1977. They have excerpts (with a brilliant thani) from a concert by Mani Iyer Sir and TNK. That is a must have for any fan of mridangam.
Anyway, I look forward to more interesting and informative posts from senior musicians like yourself.

hello,
i've been studying mridangam for the past three years from my guru sri rajesh srinivasan, a leading bombay based mridangist who studied under sri palghat raghu, i actualy find it very difficult 2 even find cds that feature the father of our branch of the tanjavur school sri palghat mani on mridangam, the only release that i found is called talavadya and features both sri palghat mani iyer and ustad allarakha khan, it's great but i certainly need more, i hope 2find some live katcheris, can anyone suggest any releases that are available or where i may be able to download music off the internet? thank you very much, also, i had heard that sri mani iyer refused to play with female vocalists with the exception of d.k., is this true? if so what reason would he have of making such a discrimination?
goddess bless,
krishna

Is it because she was his 'sambandI' and the mother of his pupil (his daughter Lalita is married to DKPs son and Mani Iyer's disciple Shivakumar)? (I have my tongue planted firmly in my cheek as I type this out!)
