Often carnatic music students are turned down by the standard remark, "alapana needs more practise", when they approach their teachers. Unless someone knows how to do alapana, it is meaningless to say that needs pracise. Let us use this thread for learning the fundamentals of alapana and the technics involved in it. Hope some experts clarify and educate us. Thanks

hello, I am lakahmy
I am a layman in this field but my daughters are learning carnatic music for the last 7 years. I also faced this problem of alapana and swarakalpana.
How to teach children. Teachers did nto take so much pain to expain the techniques. The same answer was given. need more practice.
How far i am correct in explaining, it i dont know. but i can tell u how my children doveleped the skill.
1. Listen to alapana of one particular raga many times.
2. Take the swaras from the arohana and avarohana of that raga and make some phrases
3. sing the phrases in tadarina na, akaram in that raga like wise. Best thing is to listen to various singers who has rendered alapana in the same raga. This helps a lot
In this way they have improved a lot. Hope this method is correct. If there is any difference of opinion or some better method please mail me.

Thanks Lakshmy.
Question is how do you choose the swara phrases ? what is the logic involved ?

hello,
As per my knowledge there is no specific rule or logic in that. The swaras should be the same as in arohana, avarhohana, if it is a sampoorna raga all the sapta swaras can be taken. You can make the phrases as you do for the kalpanaswaras and sing the same in the (tune of that) raga.
