hello everyone,
I'm 15 and from vancouver canada. Ever since I heard this magnificant instrument, I've been wanting to play it ever since. however, after buying my first nadhaswaram, I realise that it much much more difficult to produce a sound than I anticipated. Here in vancouver it almost impossible to find a nadhaswaram vidwan or teacher here, unlike toronto.I will going to singapore this summer, and there I hope to find a teacher who is willing to teach an anticipating student. If anyone has any information about a nadhaswaram teacher who is willing to teach me in singapore, please send me an e-mail. I would also highly appriciate any nahdaswaram information on how to play or nadhaswaram notation.
thank you

Hello Logenthiran, As you may well know already, the nearest Western instrument to Nadaswaram is the oboe. You might be able to find a local oboe teacher who could give you some hints on how to get a sound. I think I made this suggestion on Forumhub to someone else a while back: if you can find the thread you might get some other useful information from it. Have a look at the old threads, or try google.
Congratulations, anyway! I keep looking at one in the window of a nearby Tamil shop, but I wouldn't really try to play.

thanks for the tip, are u sure a oboe teacher could be any help? iknow the oboe produces a close sound, but the keys and fingerings are much different are they not? not to mention the amount of air power. thanks very much anyway

Not at all sure! It's only an idea! I'm sure that the techniques are very different. But the structure of the double reed is very similar, so an oboe player might be able to help you get started.
