Rare ragas in carnatic music

By rare ragas I mean seldom used ragas like soorya, rasikapriya and other ragas like
Poornashadjam that are generally known only
through famous compositions.
First of all, why are these ragas "rare"? I'm
interested in a list compositions based on
such rare ragas and references to rendering of
these ragas.

KVR, I think you were right the first time with the 6 raagas you mentioned.(PCh, suVas, Nary, sarMan, Hamsdhwani, Nagadhwani ) Unless the ragamalikas are also slowly evolving like the ragas.

This may not be a rare raga but a rare kriti. Is the MD mantra kriti ShriRajarajeswari in Madhyamavati performed , if not often, maybe evry so often ? It should be noted that the word Hayagriva seems to appear only once in the MD krities (in the Madhyamavati section of one of the MD ragamalikas).

I read in the Sleeve notes of a casette by Doraiswamy Iyengar about a Raga called Kaikavasi. The cassette mentioned that this was probably the rarest of ragas and that a certain compositon of Tyagaraja was probably the only one in this raga.(I forget the name ).
Can somebody provide me with the Aro-avo and also the name of the song. Also can Laxman please look into his Data Base and find out if he has other compositions listed in this Raga
Thanks.

i rememebr sudha raghunathan mentioning in a lecture-demonstration about a particular film song supposedly set to tune in lathangi.
when she asked what she felt about it, she said that yes, the tune is based on the lathangi scale but that she doesn't see any lathangi in it.
this is just an anecdote which i recollected in this context. it is not meant to show any composer in poor light.

Do Ilayarajas songs also follow the Pallavi, anupallavi etc. format ?. Sudha maybe should have heard it on celluloid, where the cavorting actors may have brought out any otherwise missing features. In this context I have heard a Bhadrachala Ramdas kriti which uses the sounds Ho-ho-ho-ho in PahiMamaSriRama. It was quite OK, may even be original ( although BMK was involved ) but other gasping, panting and labored breathing under various physical conditions can be particularly repugnant.

Lakshman: a small error, maybe a typo. 'kamalam paadha kamalam' is in Ramapriya.
Ravikiran: I think the latangi SR referred to is 'chinna raasaave' which was tuned for a low-class street dance. Ilayaraja has done this for Chakravagam and others too.

Nado:
Shrotasvini is derived from mela 21 and uses the scale S G M P N S; S N P M G S. Apart from the Ilayaraja's song, there are two compositions by Bangalore S.Mukund- Shrotapriye and Kanna tanjam in this raga.
