Hi
Panchavadyam is the beautiful percussion that u can njoy very well. Panchavadyam earlier constituted 5 vadyas viz Thoppi maddalam,Thimila, Edakka, Kuzhal, Chengila. In 1960's Famous Panchavadya Bheeshmacharyas Like Sri Thiruviluamala Venkichan Swamy, Annammanada Peethamabaramarar, Annammanada Parameswara Marar, Annammanada Achutha Marar restructured entire panchavadyam for Madathil Varavu of Thiruvambady team in the famous Thrissur Pooram, Thoppi maddalam was replaced by Shudha Maddalam, kuzhal was replaced by Kombu and Chengila was replaced by Elathaalam.

I could ask many questions, but just one for now! What is the difference between Shudha Maddalam and Thoppi maddalam?

Difference Between Thoppi Maddhalam and Shuddha Madhalam
Thoppi is relatively smaller to suddha maddhalam in size and sructure. Thoppi Maddhalm is worned in the shoulder and Shuddha Maddhalam is worned in the Hip. The Naadhas evolving from the two is also different

Mr. Krishnanath, NOOOO!! Suddha-maddalam, komb, edakka, elathalam, timila are the five instruments used besides sankh (conch) for panchavadyam. But NOT Thoppi-maddalam.

Dear Mr. Vikas
I said earlier instead of Sudhamaddhalm it was used thOppi maddhalam and I am right in that. Suddha Maddhalam replaced thOppi maddhalam only in 1960's.
Mr. Nick, u r right. In kathakali, its Suddha maddhalam.
Mr/Ms Sony

Yes Mr. Krishnanath said was right.
Now the instruments used was Suddha-maddhalam, edakka, thimila, kombu, elathalam & shanku is used in the starting stage of panchavadhyam. There is basically 5 kalam's in panchavadhyam. they are "pathi kalam", "randam kalam", "moonam kalam", "eda kalam", "ancham kalam", & after that is the "thripada" here were all the artists shows their talent of manodharmam. We can extend this kalam for hours & hours till we decide to stop. After the "kalasham" of "thripada". The panchavadhyam will come to the conclution stage were only thimila & elathalam will perform & the name of that stage is knowm as "thimila pattu".
In the initial stage they wont teach the first two kalams. These we must learn by our own.
I'm a thimila artist i've learned it from Puthukode Padmanabhan Marar "my Guru" :). I learned due to the extream craze on panchavadhyam. I've attended may programmes in difrent parts of kerala for abt 4 years.
Really enjoyed each & every moments. Its Amazingg.........

Dear Rajesh
Nice to know that u r a panchavadyam artiste.
Dear Nick
Thimila is played as Edakka. Thimila is played by both hands.
Dear Prakash Nair
Pls visit www.thamara.net/image.htm to see the picture of Panchavadyam being played in Thamaramkaulangara Sree Dharmasastha Temple, Tripunithura, Kerala.

Krishnanath; Thanks, I thought that was what you meant to say:-)
I have put a new head on my edakka but I now can't make it function correctly. I think I have reproduced the stringing patter as original, but I find that when pushing down on the body (with strap over shoulder) the heads do not stay parallel, so the body moves to the bottom of the heads. My theory is either I haven't attached the shoulder strap properly or I haven't done the right thing with the small sticks.
Hard to describe the problem in writing: probably hard to describe how it should be done too. But any advice appreciated.
I'll never play this instrument properly: I don't have good enough pitch, or knowledge of Raga, but I'd rather have it in working order!

Dear Nick
I would like to say Edakka is a wonderful instrument. ie you are getting both sruthi and thaala from the same instrument. The sruthi is adjusted by adjusting the main hollow like stuff (in malayalam will say "kutti"). Its played in such a way that, whenever u try to make sound from the instrument, you need to hold the "kutti" and move it aacordingly.
I dont have any knowledge on "how" to play it with thaala and sruthi. :)
I can make sound from that instrument which will accompany any music.:)

Krishnanath; Thanks for teaching me the name of the body of Edakka.
The way to hold the instrument was demonstrated to me by Sri Sunil, of Pranavam musicals in Trivandram.
I highly recommend him to anyone looking to buy musical instruments in Kerala.
