Tamil folk drums have a rich variety of patterns suited to different occasions like marriage, festival etc.
Thappu - 'Parai' group instrument.
Parai represent a group of folk rhythm instruments. Thappu is an important percussion instrument belonging to Parai group
Thappu is a circular drum with one end closed with cow skin membrane and the other end open. It is played with 2 hand sticks made of 'Echa' wood.

I started a topic on the "Thappu" drum, I love hearing it, along with pirai, udukku, thavil, and chenda, the most popular drums of Kerala, especially thappu, I hear it when Puli aatam is performed, and other folk dances...

Hello people,
I am looking for audio recordings of the tapphu music of Tamil Nadhu. Do any such recordings exist? I play the instrument myself, but am looking for more study material. The mp3 files on www.southindianmusic.net don't work. If anyone knows about cd's with Kerala tapphu music, I would also like to get to now this variety.
Thanks.
