  I do not know why people have to stick to
  stereotypes.They seemed to have stamped KJY as
  a pathetic Karnatic performer.
  Have you not heard his rendition of Etavunara
  (Kalyami).Its simply out of the world!
  I don't know about his doing a stint under the tutelage of Semmangudi.
  His voice has got gambheeram and his voice control is magnificient.
  I just dont know why he's being labelled as the
  black sheep of karnatic Music

  I am not qualified to comment on the classicism in anyone's perfomance. It is a truth that hundreds of thousands of lay listeners have been attracted to carnatic music just because of the mesmerising beauty of Yesudas'renditions. I know many who were initiated to carnatic music listening to semi-classical songs of Yesudas, and I have not heard anyone who can match the sterling quality of Yesudas' semi-classical renditions. Many argue that the awareness about classical music created by popular semi-classical songs is just peripheral, but remember there are huundreds like me who would never have developed a taste for carnatic music otherwise.

  Yesudas has been responsible for bringing CM to the masses in South India. He has also been instrumental in introducing CM to the movie industry in Kerala. That I think is the biggest contribution KJY has done during his lifetime.
  
  I think the purists in CM will never be satisfied but who cares for the purists but for ordinary folks like me he is a great musician. Future generations will be generous in accepting him his contribution. He is one of the most versatile singers we have seen in our generation.

  Yesudas' rendition of songs on Guruvayoorappan bring tears to my eyes. I don't care he is a Catholic by birth, I don't care that his Carnatic diction might not be to the purists' liking, I don't care that he is a film playback singer, all I know is that he has a God-given ability to melt my stony heart. The purists may fight their petty fights among themselves, but ende Guruvayoorappan is ALL EARS when KJY sings.

  To be so critical about the contribution of KJ to carnatic music by the purists is not a surprise. How could they ever accept a catholic christian embrace hindu tradition and bring awareness to this great form music by perseverence and dedication. He is one of the versatile singers country has seen and a like of him may not be seen for generations to come. I was fortunate to meet him in person and what I find is a man of humility, devotion to music and purity in heart.
  KJ may not match the stalwarts of Carnatic Music but he has contributed enough to have me a non-carnatic music lover to take interest.

  Carnatic & Classic music was there since long. However It is only KJY who has made Classical music so pupular and brought to the commons especially they were not able to grasp it.Now a small child will say "its Yesudas" whenever he listens to KJY's music.
