SLOWLY BUT STEADILY THIS OS IS BECOMING THE FAVORITE OF SO MANY MULTINATIONALS.
WHAT IS THE MAGIC?IS IT BECAUSE OF IT'S OPEN SOURCE?OR IT'S RELiABILITY?
IS LINUX WORTH LEARNING? HOW DO YOU INSTALL LINUX?HOW DO YOU DUAL BOOT
LINUX WITH WINDOWS? ....... let us explore......

Linux is yet another unix. There is a difference. The OS (Operating System) is there for free. It is as reliable as any proprietory Unix - much more reliable than any OS from Micro$oft.
The OS by itself does not make it useful to the average user - you need the so called productivity applications. Applications comparable to Micro$oft Office do not exist on Linux (Unix) platforms.
For ftp/http servers Linux is an excellent choice and that is where Linux is mostly deployed in corporate environemnts - not as desktop workstations.
Linux is ideal for scientific/engineering educational and research institutions.
If you want to learn the internals of Unix, there is no better alternative.
How do you dual boot Linux and Windows? There are serveral boot loaders available for Linux and the most popular is one called LiLo. LiLo is very sophisticated (read complex) and will allow you to boot into several operating systems.
I simply can not understand why India does not exploit Linux? How come all those zillions of programmers in India can not come up with something like MS Office?
I remember many of the contributors of Linux specfically mentioning India as one of the countries that could benefit from their work.
You see, unlike Windoze, Linux does not come with all the trappings of Microsoft's incompetence.

MV,
I dont love MS. Gnu's emacs and TeX and LaTex were decades ahead of MS. But corporate america has decided Linux will mainly be a price control mechanism to counter the MS monopoly. Sun is giving away Star Office for free and if it has not already been ported to Linux, it will be soon.
Windows has been winning the war agains unix mainly because of the cheap componants like memory chips and disk drives. And they got cheap because of economies of scale. Sun solaris 40 Gig drive costs 2000$ or more. On PC boxes the same drives cost what 200$? Linux, with its ability to take advantage of the economies of scale, has the potential. A 64 bit port of linux, running on generic intel/amd chipsets can capture the engineering workstation markets.
But till PC manufacturers ship linux installed in factory MS can play its games. IE is the biggest client to Linux Servers. All bugs in IE that affect only Linux servers, MS wont fix. Admins blame Linux Servers because IE seems to work fine with NT servers. You need to have strong clients like Netscape to prove that the bug is IE not in the server. But Netscape is going downhill. It is with enormous effort on my part I am sticking with Netscape for all my browsing and email needs. Even I hate netscape 6.0. Almost all servers running asp give big trouble to Netscape.
Overall, sadly, much as I love Linux, it is doomed .

Could someone help me!
I have a Microsoft Windows98 FAT 16/1GB primary Partition system.(Total capacity of Hard disk 2GB)
I wish to Load Red Hat Linux7.0 using the Partitionless Installation Method.
That is first I formatted the 800MB Extended partition by Windows FDISK/FAT16.
After Installing through Linux CDROM by DISK DRUID Partitioning,The 2 main system files are copied but after that it is hanging and the system needs to be restarted.
What should be the problem?

I do not see much of a future for Linux in US. However, Linux holds tremendous potential in developing countries which are on the threhold of information age. I am sure China is making good use of Linux. A country like India stands to benefit enormously by investing in Linux. Why worry about the US software market, which is under MS stranglehold?
We can create another Microsoft in India by writing applications software for Linux and market them to developing countries at prices affordable by them. I strongly feel this is a great opportunity to really choke MS from expanding its tentacles in the developing countries. Don't discount former Soviet Union. There are a lot of talented programmers there. If we don't exploit this opportunity, some one else will.
We have the knowledge of the International language. Neither Russians nor Chinese have the edge. We do.
Are'nt you glad, you chose to learn English in place of Hindi?

Divine,
There are a lot of Linux oriented newsgroups. They are extremely useful. You will get your questions answered in a couple of days. This forum is not the right place.
Since you have already partitioned your disk using DOS Fdisk, Disk Druid should automatically find the partition and should give you the option to choose the parition where you wanted Linux to be installed. It does not have to repartition the drive and if it did, you lost everything on your primary partition - Windoze 98.
If you don't care about the stuff on your primary partition, delete all the partitions created by DOS/Fdisk and try installing Linux. Check to see if it goes ok.
You can always wipe everything out with a
fdisk/mbr option through DOS or boot off a Linux boot-root disk and wipe the sucker clean.
If I don't make any sense to you, don't bother with multi-boot. Try to get some of those removable IDE drivers and keep the OSes on separate drives.

What do you mean by Removable IDE drives pls exp

Typically IDE drives are internal. If you have to replace them, you have to open up the computer case.
Removable IDE drives can be removed and inserted without opening up the computer case. If you want to run Linux on your computer, simply plug in the drive that contains Linux and fire up the machine. And when you want to run Windoze-whatever you plug in the drive containing Windoze-whatever, and fire up the computer. IDE drives (removable or not) are not hot swappable.
Removable IDE drives are regular IDE drives with a frame that gets mounted in the computer case. The frame has the connector to connect to the IDE cable. It is simply a convenient mechanism to swap drives.
If you have two internal IDE drives, you can also keep the OSes separate. When you choose to boot into Linux, you have to boot from a floppy; the default OS will be Windoze which will be resident on drive-0.
Life gets much simpler, if you keep the OSes separate. Once you get familiar with Linux, then you can fool with multi-boots.

I think that we are now entering an era where sharing rules. Open source, etc will eventually dominate, since its free and people want to contribute. Look at Napster for instance.

Divine,
Installing linux in fat partition is not the best option,Its not recommended.
Instead split partition,
Backup your data if you have any,
Repartition dont format,
Use fips.exe to split the primary partition,One for windows and one for linux,(Linux needs a minimum of nearly 1 MB)
Install first windows98 on C
Then Install linux in the other splitted parttion Native linux partition.
RedHatlinux 7.x is the best linux version .

Yoga kumar, it is not that easy to learn SQL from web groups. Get a good book and read a lot.
Further you need to improve your English too to get good jobs.
