Hi Ppl,

i am a newbie here. Happen to stumble upon this fantastic forum. A question which has been hunting me.....are all those pierecings when carryin a kavadi necessary? what is the significance of it?

Will really appreciate some answers.

  i think its basically made up, since i believe there is no such thing that only a certain idol or deity possesses a person, and the person behaves like that.
  even if it so, why don't other gods and only murugan, muneeswara comes?
  not meaning to offend devotees but this is true.

  This is like meditation, but I would say a lod meditation rather a silent one. In meditation we focus our thoughts to an object or a sound. The goal of meditaion is to have a one pointed thought and in that we we could preceive our real "self" or atma or soul. when someone get "possessed" with a diety, it means the person is in focus of that particlar form or object. But that continues only for a seond or few second or a few minutes. the person tries to keep it or lenghten the time through a rythm, the rythm could be a sound (drum beat) or chant (mantras) and so the mind would foucs and try to be one thought oriented.
  
  Why would some one pierce his own body?. This also would help to achieve the above said purpose of help the mind focus on one thought. when the body is pierced the mind get focussed on that particular organ (object). Like when we get a tooth ache our whole attention is on the tooth or on the pain.
  
  Dont ridicule these practises. These mind be mind boggling for us. But these are feats that are used by people to get into a blissful state where they are with their own self. I have written before in this FH that , this is why people attempt to have a roller coast ride or a sky diving or such sports which might be dangerous to look at. But is thrilling moment for the person who does it. The difference is sports and religious ritual which in one case equally thrills others in another case disgusting or painful for others.
