In Sri Lanka, there is a lot of Buddhist but they speak only Sinhalese. Tamil buddhist should be existed for a long time ago. But they're now kept in silence and we don't know why.

Un_gars,
We are the buddhists. We worship Buddha( call him perumal or vishnu), we observe ahimsa( some tamils are vegetarians), we are moralistic .... this is what Buddha asked his followers to do.
Buddha never started a seperate religion. He was a Hindu and died a Hindu, wanted us to be Hindus. We tamils follow this to the core.

It takes some real courage and human intellects to be Buddhist. As in Buddhism, there are “NO” external forces, such as god, imagined or beguiled by ignorant people and believed to be the vehicle for human salvation. For humans, the ultimate meaning of Buddhism is to realise the culmination of human intelligence and wisdom with outright rejection of god in any form, physical or non-physical.
However, there are uninformed people who superstitiously believe that the Buddhism was a branch of Hinduism. In fact the two are absolutely exclusive to each other and utterly incompatible philosophies.

Budhha was neither Hindu nor Buddhist. Gotama renounced the world before he became Buddha. He renounced his name, Gotama, his clan, Sakya and went to forest to seek Truth. He came back and taught Dhamma. Calling him Hindu or Buddhist is great insult to him. Saints have no religion, domas and sects. The are universal. The true followers of Dhamma, Thruth have no religion or sect. They belong to Universal Community.
Neither Tamils nor Singalees follow the true teaching of Buddha. To follow Buddha or his Dhamma. They should become humen, with the principle of humanity.
May all beings be happy

There is a very small community of Tamil Buddhists in Sri Lanka. Many Tamil Buddhists became Sinhalese in the past in Sri Lanka and there were several Tamil Buddhist monks who reached great heights in the monasteries of Anuradhapura. So many Buddhist Sinhalese were originally Tamil Buddhists or Hindus who converted to Buddhism as time passed. Today many low castes in TN are converting to Buddhism too.

A rose by whatever name called will smell as sweet, this is what the great author shakespear said.
Lord buddha was not a hindu and did not belong to any other cast or religion. As he did not find the true enlightment in other religion he found and developrd his own and this is currently known as BUDDHISM.The name buddhism is the english word for buddha's durma. Durma means teaching and thereby durma of lard buddha is buddha durma which is buddhism.
