  in castes and tribes of south india written by thurston, tuluva vellalars came from tulu country which is currently mangalore. they spoke tulu supposedly the oldest dravidian language much like what is now spoken by the bunts e.g the shettys and rai's. the brahmins of the area are the pai's. hope this helps you
