The Madras COrporation did nothing to prevent this. They should have foreseen this problem and should have taken some steps to bring water to chennai. The steps like bringing Krishna water to chennai. this work should have been speeded up and putting bore pupms around places in chennai.etc..THe acute water probs is due to the bad governance of DMK govt. and its Mayor Stalin

We all know the problems with auto rickshaws. Pollution, complete disregard for traffic rules, "soodu vechchufying" in meters and the never ending haggling. Any hope that it will be cleaned up someday is gone forever because now almost all these rickshaws are owned by traffic policemen and since the fox has become the "naattamai", it is asking for two goats per "kedai".
Same thing with water. All hopes are lost. The vested interests that benefit by water shortage is well established. They wont let ANYONE solve the water problem.
First the urban sprawl happened that increased the demand by several folds. Also the urban sprawl encouraged encroachments in the lakes and ponds around the city. With the collusion of the politicians and the revenue officials they have "kooRu" pOttufied the lakes. I have played cricket myself in two lake beds in summers. Nanganallur lake, west of Jayalakshmi Theatres in Adambakkam and also the lake north of Adambakkam police station and east of Mastan Gori street. Now these two lakes are completely occupied.
In a normal year these homes should be underwater. So what do they do? They have completely breached the lake bund at many places. Water just runs off. This has happened to every lake and water basin around the city. There is no way Chembarambakkam, Puzhaleri, or Poondi to store more than 30 day supply of water.
Then these water tanker lorries started supplying water and they have a good business going. Every flat society collects money from the residents and buy a tank of water and fill their tanks. Their business will be threatened if there is a good supply of water to the city. They regularly break the lake bunds and let the water out.
So forget it. Madras will always have water problems. There is no solution. There is no incentive to find a solution. There is no one capable of finding a solution. There will be no solution.

Reminds me of a tragic incident in Madurai when I was living there. There was a corporation councellor from the CPI(M) party named Ms.Leelavathi in the Villapuram area of Madurai. This was one of the many unplanned development areas of Madurai. And as such, there were no water facilities and water was a major business run by the local thugs, which was backed up by the support of the ruling party (through a prodigal son!). Now this woman, as is the wont of her party members in going against injustice, and with the courage that comes to them natually, started laying pipes for getting water to the downtrodden people living there and she was rightly rewarded by getting brutally murdered in broad daylight in a street. In spite of top leaders like Surjeet personally taking up this issue, the ruling party was still able to hush it up, thanks to our masses. What becomes clear in looking at such issues is that most of such problems have vested interests. It is so pathetic to see the water lorries being over worked today in Chennai, which led to the death of a group of children recently.
There are certainly solutions, but then they are not as simple as the short term solutions we always come up with, and they presuppose a greater change in our thinking habits...

Looks like people have to migrate out of the
city. What a great city it was! This water-problem
is the only long-lasting curse on this city.
The Politicians who got the votes don't care
a hell for it. My family in Chennai is spending
Rs.400 a week paying the lorry-wallah for sharing
from a common sump. Whether it is f***ing Karunanidhi or f***ing Jayalalitha who is in power
they don't care at all. They always get water
in their home faucets. The people should start
revolting like the people of the French revolution period.

Vote for your jayamma and become fools.
Shame on u tamilians.

What we Indians, as a people have as a major problem, is a mind block that prevents us from taking care of ourselves and depending on the Government for everything. Please do understand that the Government is NOT the epitome of Thayumanavar. Naturally, the local party thugs will benefit. We need to act for ourselves, now, organise local community action, force local municipalities to set aside land for lakes, dig up the cement and let rainwater charge the underground sources and do anything and everything to become independent of the Government. This will take time and community effort, but communities throughout the world have discovered that localised effort at the micro level, in any issue, always has benefitted them, rather than waiting for manna from the Government. Villages in Rajastan and Gujarat, with the aid of Rajendra Singh now have water to last them over three years of drought. Rajendra Singh, who? The man who was awarded the Magsaysay award. Who helped so many villages figure out that self help is the best help. If anyone is interested, there is an organisation called the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), which is doing terrific work and has brought out two books- `making water everybody's business' and `Dying Wisdom', the latter book detailing traditional water harvesting methods, which still serve in today's context. The water mafia is here, but we need to face this problem in a united fashion against them, use our wits and resources, to emerge triumphant. Stop getting depressed over life's problems and search for solutions with the dedication of the scientists searching for the cancer and AIDS cure. The answers will come.

Well, I don't live in Chennai but will be moving there shortly. I am scared to death about the water problem particularly with an infant. True, the government has everything to do with it. They are so busy trying to figure out a strategy to get back into power that their manifestos got for a toss. Everyone works for their personal gains. Name me one politician who did anything for the people. In terms of development and infrastructure, if TN govt. does not pull up its socks, investmets will die and Chennai's develpoment will die an infant death. So, BUCK UP!!

early this year i spent 6 weeks in madras as an experiment and water shortage was one thing i wanted to understand. the room i stayed in, west mambalam/ T nagar area, had a bucket and tap as well as a toilet. tehre were 58 rooms in that guest house/lodge. and there were no water problems. i had a shower every dayetc... yes , i did have to buy drinking water as a safety measure but all the restaurents had jugs of water. i did see lorries delivering water all the time in madras, (and in sivakasi, and madurai the 2 other places i visited as well).
what i want to know is in the maps of madras i had, there is the river called coovam. i never saw no river. where there was supposed to be a river at parts lay a cesspit etc... how did the river die? in madurai, there was no river either. i walked across the barren waste wher the river was supposed to run!!! as a 8 year old kid i remember swimming accross that river!!! as my bus was crossing river kavery near trichy, the bus slowed down and again no water!!!
do the rivers fill up during the rain season? about 25 - 30 miles from the city of madras on the bus, i noticed a lake or river or reservoir. what or where was this. there was plenty of water there. and i think i saw a boat or two there as well.

guys, my uncle works in NGRI,hyderabad. He had to do a research in the water reserves in souther India to get his PH.D. He said with in 3 yrs all the normal H2O will get depleted and the vacant space beneath wii be filled by salt water from the ocean. So only the SALT water desalination plant is the only option. So think twice abt buying a house here since the salt water desalination plant is not a joke and it needs a huge investment. The water obtained will be very costly when compared to the prices we pay for getting water. So lets hope the best for singara chennai.
