The current Sri Lankan government headed by Ranil Wickremesinghe and Tamil Tigers are preparing for the peace talks. According to a report appeared this morning, the TULF leader M. Sivasithamparm may settle for a federal state.

We, Eelam Tamils, have made enormous sacrifice in order to secure freedom. Even if the current Sri Lankan government grants a federal state, there is no guarantee that the next government would not abolish the federal system of government. No country in the world will ensure safety and security for Eelam Tamils. We need to defend ourselves.
Considering the animosity that exists between Sinhalese and Tamils, federal system will not work for Sri Lanka. Tamils do require a Tamil army to protect them from Sinhalese. However, both Sinhalese and Tamils do require a confederacy to protect them from aliens. Under a confederation, both Sri Lanka and Eelam could have their own security forces.
I would prefer an independent sovereign Eelam nation to any other alternative. However, no country would be prepared to recognize Eelam even if LTTE defeats the Sri Lankan military. The situation may change with changing geopolitics. At this moment, I would say a confederation would be the best compromise for both Sinhalese and Tamils.
Both Sri Lankan government and Tigers need to agree on a rotating presidential system for the confederation in order to secure a just solution for the ethnic conflict.
I request both Sinhalese and Tamils who are interested in finding a peaceful solution to voice their suggestions in this thread. Please do not turn this thread into a Sinhala Tamil hate thread.
Thanks,
Periyar Arivar

VP,
It does not make any logical sense (at least to the Buddhist Prelate leadership and top politicians but foot soldiers are immune from such ‘intelligence’ hence 1983) to ethnically cleanse us from Colombo because in Colombo you have us by our b a l l s. We don’t pose any real (or imagined) threat to you but as a homogenous ethnic group spread over a strategically important landmass u want us all gone. You can salivate as much as you want but you will NEVER succeed in eliminating us as a people. The story of Turkish Armenian Genocide, Sudetan Germans, European Jews and every other holocaust is an example, there is NEVER a final solution.

VP,
I hope you are right about not being genocidists, but your history since independance does not wouch for it. I guess we just have to let you guys prove to us by not mass killing us in the future :((((

Well here comes happy days again. LTTE heroes are now inviting the Muslims back home to Jaffna. And I thought LTTE does not make any mistakes. I think if the LTTE is really genuine about this as No-name claims, they can promise to get the Muslims all settled in their old homes within the same 72 hours they were told to get out.
My question: are any of these Muslims really so stupid as to believe the heroes who chased them out?
No-name the unabashed mouthpiece now tries to put the label of genocide on Sinhalas when after 162 suicide-attacks there have been no riots, no "72 hours to get out." Last time I checked there were Tamils with cyanide around their necks running in Wanni. How many Sinhalas?

The festival's cultural programs began with traditional Naathaswaram music. The Thamil Engal Uyir festival concluded around 4.30 a.m. Friday morning. There has been no politico-cultural program on such massive scale in the Mannar district since the war began to escalate in 1983, a TNA parliamentarian for the Vanni, Mr. Sivasakthi Anandan, said. "Thamil Engal Uyir has clearly shown the world that decades of cruel oppression and the devastation wrought on every inch of our homeland by the Sri Lankan security forces have not broken our determination to achieve our goal. It has reiterated our unbreakable will amidst great adversity to live as free men and women in the land of our ancestors", he said. “

Asymmetrical sharing of power – Catlonia an exampl
“The roots of Catalonia as a nation with its own territory and government go back to the early part of the Middle Ages.
The progressive emancipation of the Counts of Catalonia from the Frankish kings throughout the 10th and 11th centuries, the conquest of new territories wrested from the Saracens and the ensuing repopulation of this area with Catalan-speakers, together with the supremacy of the Counts of Barcelona (Ramon Berenguer III and Ramon Berenguer IV) were all decisive factors in the long process of Catalan unification. This process led to the establishment of Barcelona as the capital city, the consolidation of a unified government over the Catalan counties, and the implantation of the country’s own language. The heads of the House of Barcelona were to govern the Catalan people for the better part of five centuries.
Throughout the centuries, the Catalan nation has had various political institutions and forms of government, each one appropriate to its time, with varying degrees of sovereignty. During certain periods, these institutions corresponded to the existence of a sovereign state, while at other more recent times they have represented a sharing of power with the central Spanish state. “

"Canada, Switzerland and Spain are among federal states that have been studied by experts looking at possible autonomy arrangements, said Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu, a political analyst and executive director of the Centre for Policy Alternatives in Colombo.
"There are a lot of models," he said.
"But the problem here is that the two sides have never sat across the table and discussed outstanding political issues."
