Cong, BJP women clash outside Sonia's house

NILANJANA BHADURI JHA

TIMES NEWS NETWORK [ THURSDAY, AUGUST 29, 2002 4:49:49 PM ]

NEW DELHI: In high drama on Thursday afternoon, Congress leader Ambika Soni was hit on the head when BJP and Congress women workers clashed outside the 10 Janpath residence of party president Sonia Gandhi.

The incident took place at about 1.45 pm when 60 to 70 BJP women, reportedly including former BJP MLA Purnima Sethi and BJP mahila morcha leader Kanta Nalwade, assembled in the high security zone and shouted slogans against Sonia on the issue of councillor Atma Ram Gupta's murder. The Congress has alleged that the BJP women, armed with "sharp-edged weapons, lathis, stones and glass bottles" tried to enter Sonia's residence with the intention of "harming her physically."

Mahila Congress workers at the nearby 24 Akbar Road Congress office rushed to the site and a scuffle ensued. Soni who was entering the office premises also went there and was said she was surrounded and attacked. "I was hit on my head with a stone", said Soni, back after receiving first aid at the parliament annexe clinic.

Alleging that police personnel present there attacked the Congresswomen instead of restraining the "BJP hooligans", Soni held Union Home Minister LK Advani responsible for the "shameful and unprecedented serious security lapse outside the residence of the leader of Opposition."

The party has sought an explanation from both Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Advani on how the BJP workers were allowed to reach 10 Janpath, where prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC are imposed and why was the police "soft in dealing with the hooligans." The police have, however, said the BJP demonstration was staged outside the Congress headquarters.

The Congress has also registered an FIR with the New Delhi police alleging that "instead of the police preventing the BJP hooligans, they were attacking the Congressmen." Senior leader Motilal Vora said in his complaint: "Though this is a high security zone, we were shocked to see that BJP hooligans led by women were allowed to reach the Congress President's office."

Showing a large hole in her dupatta, which was torn during the clash, Soni said: "We were manhandled by policemen, a constable hit me in the side with a lathi and a shoe hit my face. We did not want to fight them, but if we had not gone there they would have barged into the (Sonia Gandhi's) house through the narrow gate." A Congresswoman, Dr Jyoti was injured badly in the scuffle and even lost gold ornaments.

Eyewitnesses said the BJP women had planned their move well. "Initially only four or five woman assembled outside 10 Janpath and shouted anti-Sonia slogans. Mahila Congress officebearers, who thought it was some disgruntled Congresswomen asked them to come to 24 Akbar Road and discuss their problems. But soon more women arrived in batches in cars and Maruti gypsies, led by BJP leaders like Poornima Sethi and Meera Kawaria," a Congress staffer present there said.

Sensing trouble, Congresswomen rushed to the spot and were attacked by BJP women, the staffer added, "while the police did nothing to stop them." The Congresswomen hit back. Later, Youth Congress activists made a retaliatory protest at the BJP headquarters at Ashoka Road, where there was another clash between workers of the two parties.

The Congress office was abuzz with activity till late in the evening, with workers hanging around even as joint commissioner of police Amod Kanth was closeted with Vora. Soni refused to meet any policeman saying, "they should have acted then."

The BJP, meanwhile, has insisted that the demonstration against "criminalisation of politics", in the wake of Gupta's murder was peaceful and that it was the Congresswomen who attacked and injured its mahila morcha leader Kanta Nalwade. "Everyone has a right to express their views in a democracy, but it cannot be countered by violence," said BJP spokesman Arun Jaitley.

Amod Kanth said the police had registered cases of rioting and violation of prohibitory orders. "We will take action against whoever is found guilty", he said.

Dear Editor,
Times Of India.

This news of Cong and BJP women clashing , brings out vividly the futuristic scenario when the Thirty-three percent women's reservation bill comes into effect.
Torn attire, dis shevelled hair, broken and bleeding noses and limbs etc will be a common feature among Indian women politicians.
This will then be a gastly contrast to our Glorious Sports women and beauty pagent winners, who make every indian's heart beat with pride , admiration and affection for Indian women folk !!
This sad and shameful trend of quarrel ushered in by our women politicians must come to an immediate end !!

Your's sincerely,
Venkatkrishnan.k
