A little bit of elaboration on originality as
the art of concealing your sources.
When I read Sujatha 'muthal kurangu' I thought
that was a original kindal, until Mani
points out that it was borrowed from
Pudumaipithan. (he knows that source). BUt
we may never know if it was actually
Pudumaipithan's own idea or he borrowed it
from some one quietly. We may
never have a way of knowing it. He is no more.
Only possibility is someone who knows the real
source reads this thread and posts a message here.
But, for all practical purposes, I can
take Sujatha to be the source of the idea,
and it is OK, since it is the idea that matters
to me, not Sujatha! That way I dont have
to go to California and get expert's
opinion on whether a writer is original.
I read his writing and gives me new thoughts,
he is original to me!
What we need are well thought out ideas,
and practically useful or insightful
ideas, they dont need to be original ideas.
And this definition, 'originality is the
art of concealing your sources' itself is
not mine. I read it somewhere, may be in
one of Sujatha's essays!

Mani, may be we should think up better words
for 'soft-porn' and 'originality'. Both the
words seem to be translations from English
and without the English backing and bracketing, they dont make sense!
I would use 'kamak-kilukiluppu' for soft-porn.
For originality, we might need to use
different words, like 'sontha sinthanai or suya sinthanai' as against 'mandapathil
oru aal utkarnthu ezhudi koduthal'

Sugrutha,
I dont see anything wrong in converting it
into a discussion thread on Sujatha, if we
feel like discussing it. We might need to
create a new thread or search for an old
thread on Sujatha and continue there, if the
current thread title is too misleading for
new comers!
I think there is a place for
devotion and hardcore sex in each brain.
I dont see it as vakram. Just different
aspects.

It was Sujatha's (?) Santhipom Pirivom (?) that made me decide to come to USA when I was in great 7.
Just like in the story I came here and got myself an MBA along with other degrees.
It is strange how silly fiction affects people.

Rjay,
There is a 'Sujatha' thread in the Tamil literary discussions(?) hub.
http://www.forumhub.com/tlit/20295.08.43.42.html
It should probably be transferred to the Miscellanious section - the right place for sundry topics.

The word "Innaiyam" was coined in the tamil@tamil.net mailing list circa 1996 or earlier during a discussion on coining technical words in Tamil. ' 'Ҹ , Ţ . ., áâ . , ؾ . Ĩ ը Ǽ š츢ɡ . ɧ ܼ Ũ Ȣ ĺ ¢. Ш .

taking the thread away from sujatha, in our opinions, what are the top 10 good things in contemporary thamizh culture? my list would include these,
1. the big presence of thamizh on the net.
2. the inherent poetic thinking present among tamils. was talking with vanchi the other day, and he mentioned the example of using "idhazh, malar" for magazine issues.
3. that the paguththarivu movement and religious faith co-exist, peacefully to a large extent.

I request thost that still use the old Anjal Inaimathi fonts to post to the forum to use the font tags as <"InaiMathi,InaiKathir,WebTamil"> rather than just <"Inaimathi">. The WebTamil font is an Anjal compatible free font from (I think) www.intamm.com. There are other Anjal compatible fonts as well (e.g. from www.kalvi.com). On some systems, I have to use the KeyMan program to type in TSCII encoding. Keyman's keyboard driver is incompatible with the Murasu Anjal's keyboard driver. As a result, I am unable to read the postings in Anjal font directly (I have to do cut and paste to Wordpad). And a request to Anjal2000 users. You can configure Anjal to type in TSCII encoding and select InaimathiTSC font. But don't mix the InaiMathi and InaiMathiTSC font tags under any cirumstance. Thanks,
