Unemployment : The real villain
-------------------------------
What is the real cause for unemployment today ?
I think the following are the reasons :
1. Some jobs are viewed as mean while others are considered as prestigeous.
2. Employment is nothing but REALISING ONE'S OWN LIFE'S MISSION AND COMPLETING IT. IT IS NOTHING BUT OCCUPYING A SPACE FOR THE SELF IN THIS WORLD.... TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE WORLD WHAT ONE IS CAPABLE OF CONTRIBUTING. The main reason for unemployment is not realising this. People are frantically after jobs....white collar jobs....not realing what can be done by himself...of his own. No one wants to live on the edge...to take some risk...to take his own destiny in his hands. I believe the problem is in the way we think....it is a cancerous pattern of thinking. People fear to be creative, to be enterprising and bold. Everyone wants the salary packet....just that, assured. Young people are languishing without any work all the day and cursing their fate and the rulers... this needs to be changed. One should be responsible for one's own plight, destiny or success. We should start thinking differently.
3. Manual work and trades are shunned by the youth. Everyone wants a swinging chair in an AC Room with a peronal computer and secretary.... If possible a HiTech job in the States...or a Doctor...or an engineer or lawyer atleast. Are these the only jobs? The Governments promote this unhealthy thought patterns by opening as many profesional colleges as possible. Only who are so academic need to go for such jobs. There are other jobs as well which is equally supportive. Every job should be treated with respect. That will be the end of the problem.

There will be always discontentment, even if most of the people are employed. Humans work on a comparative basis. People always try to find greener pastures to make their life better. In seventies and eighties it was gulf migration and in nineties, exodus to US. Several teachers and clerks gave up their stable jobs, learned JAVA/Mocha to earn more, either in abroad or in India. This is risk taking, with a certain risk to reward ratio. If you witness the kids driven to wall by their parents and the amount of sacrifices the parents go through, you'll understand the claustrophobic nature of the society to get out/ahead, a sort of survival instinct. Somehow, creativity is subdued and the fire of a genius is missing in action. I view discontentment as a key ingredient for furthering ones life, though most of the religions preach otherwise.
Govt does not provoke any unhealthy thought, since it lacks one to begin with.. It needs to provide a proper fiscal and monetary policy and keep inflation under check. I'm told the interest rates will fall further to 6% and the inflation is tame. The Govt's monetary policy is in the right direction and fiscal needs to be shifted towards the supply side.
DIGNITY:
US has transitioned itself from being a farmers society, to manufacturing, then to Service and lately to busted technology. People have respect for other jobs and are aware of their past. At a macro level, there is dignity in the work you do. One could have become rich by owning "Waste Management Inc" a glorified name indeed. This, in Indian Parlance, is nothing but a bunch of Thotti's managed by a Senior Thotti (no insult intended..). The Social stigma attached to such jobs are unbearable and are undertaken only by folks with dire straits.

Even in the highly educated field, often a lack of proper planning will lead to widespread unemployment. My point is, the curriculum in school/college should also undergo changes from time to time, in tune with the change in the job scenario. But this is not happening in many cases. Even from personal experience, whatever I had learnt/mugged in engineering course for CS had no relation to the skills required of me in the job. In colleges in India Civil engineering(building construction etc) continues to maintain the highest number of seats eventhough for the last 10-15 yrs there's been virtually no recruitment in this field(except for the most brilliant students, of course). The result is, most of these students go for other options, like the IT field nowadays. This was the case for many of my friends who graduated with me but often their background comes as a barrier in their getting recruited for these jobs. One of my friends who graduated with me 2 years ago but in a non-CS background is still jobless and is cursing her fate. she's not thinking about dignity of job etc now. It is long since she tried for jobs supposedly 'beneath' her background like the banking sector but of no avail. And the thing has only worsened as the years go by. In the present situation, those who've got a job should thank their stars.
