You trust your spoon and fork to be more
clean than your own fingers?

Once an eminent Indian went to party in england ( I dont remeber the indian I think it was Sathyamurthy, I am not sure). He started eating with his fingers which promptly invited raised eybrows and stares from the host. The host exclaimed "Is'nt eating with your fingers a bit dirty?". The indian replied, "Mam, my fingers go only into my mouth, can you tell me how many mouths the fork and spoon has seen?". Naturally the host beat a hasty retreat.
You can eat an ice cream with your fingers tho many kids try to do that.Try eating barotta and maida puri with spoon, it is bound to end up as a circus.
Its all an individual preference and depends on the type of food also..

As we get older, we don't go for very delicious food than healthier. Moreover, when we eat food using a spoon, say, thayir saadham(already mashed) the little bit of cream in the yogurt does not stick on the palm while we wash and if we eat for a long time those who have soft fingers, they get unshaped and a little uneasy. So although the taste is better since there is a little bacteria in our fingers, we go for spoon because of the above mentioned reason only.

It is ok if u wash your hands thoroughly before eating. indians have the custom of washing their hands before doing any auspicious thing. And eating food is an auspicious thing too.

The customs were practiced from time immemorial according to the climate and geography of the place. Westerners cannot afford to always wash
their hands with water, as most of the time it is
cold there. Tropical Indians have to always wash themselves with water for everything. (Same reason why tissue-paper is not used in Indian toilets). There is no use of fighting about it.
I was surprised to see the "Namboothiri" priest in Bhadrinath Temple wearing a woolen-sweater while doing Pooja which is strictly prohibited if he is doing Pooja in Kerala. He is not supposed to wear anything to cover his upper-part of trunk, there. But as it is very cold in Bhadrinath, he is allowed to wear a woolen-sweater.

To whoever began this post...
We in India have been taught to wash and thus keep our hands clean at all times.

I feel, I must appreciate anu for telling eating is auspicious. Thanks. Indians even wash their legs when they enter their house etc. they wash their legs too after eating. It is a sort of 'signal' that something is complete or something is to start etc.

While on this topic of fulfilling biological needs, what do you people think about wiping one's a*s with toilet paper. If I have to visit any western country again, this is the first off-putting thought that comes to my mind! I've had enough harrowing experiences!

Eating with hand is very healthy. For thousands of years the hands and brain and the digestive system have eveolved to work in a co-ordinated fashion. As soon as the hand touches food, nervous stimulation occurs in the hand which triggers digestive juice secretion. this is the same response when we smell food and also see food. This is TOUCH response.
Eating with hand adds to another enjoyment. Food that we eat gratifies our sight senses, smell senses, taste senses and also hand enjoys the texture of foods before the mouth could enjoy.
Touch of hand also has healing powers. Researchers found when premature babies were touched by hand they grew faster than untouched babies.
Even after comming to USA I still continue to eat with hands and advocate it.
Watch the kids , how they enjoy licking thier hands (even it may be a American kid).

Human fingers are the most flexible fork/spoon given by nature. Nobody can deny that. Also there are less chances to hurt the inner mouth(especially if kids using metal forks) and to some extent portions of face.
Like every tool, the fingers also need to be maintained properly (cut nails regularly and wash it before and after food).
There is nothing wrong or feeling shame to eat using fingers

Commonly found among Indians and Muslims yes. But Indian Hindus are generally very clean and wash their hands and sometimes their feet throughly before a meal or even when they come into the kitchen or place of worship within the house. Cleanliness is a way of life within most Hindu households. We dont eat like our Muslim friends with unclean hands, dipping both into dishes at the same time especially while constantly scratching ones crotch which is a habitual practice among them.

Lotta Water, try using the toilet paper first and then wash with water later when you are able!!
As long as people eat with their right hand in the plate or leaf while the left is used for serving thats fine with me. People should also hold their tumblers/glasses with the left hand and not smear them with the right hand!!
Hands help us feel our food better too. After all it is our tactile senses at work. The west didn't use cutlery until much later. They too used their fingers and knives to stab their meat dishes before the invention of forks and spoons.

the eyes see
the nose smells aroma of the food
the tounge tastes
the ear hears the cooking and boiling sound the hands that serve the love and care..
In the hand the fingers feel the food whether it is hot or too hot
the brain acknowledges
the six senses work while eating in ur hand
