Is Gounder similar to Nair?

Hi,
Does the Gounder community has the status in Tamil Nadu same as what Nair community has in Kerala? If they are not similar, which is the community in TN with similar status/charasteristics as Kerala Nair? I hope the word 'status' is not misleading. Somebody please enlighten me.

Dear Mr oru-Nair,
As you guessed, the issue is marriage only! Our friends (Nair boy and Gounder gal) are in a dilemma because gal's paretns will allow her to get married to someone only if that guy is from Gounder community or any of 'equivalant' communities. So basically my question was, will gounder people consider Nair community as equivalant to their community.

Gounder people should consider Nair as "higher" than their community. So there should not be any problem.
Apart from that, if the girl and boy are deeply in love, the community they belong to, does not matter. We must not give importance to such things in these modern days! Hoping that you will kindly post the wedding invitation in forumhub. Sarva MangaLam bhavathu for both the bride and groom.

I was just testing if there are any Gounders around by giving that statement. No community is higher or lower than another in this world. Generally Gounders of Coimbatore are a very proud set of people. But Nairs are also proud guys. Generally Nairs inter-marry only with Menons, Pillais (Kerala Pillai), PaNikkar, Nambiar and Kurup. Nowadays they inter-marry with Ambalavasi communities like Pisharodi, Eradi, Warrier, Nambeesan, Chakyar, Marar, Unni (not the name Unni). But again I say, in these modern days one must not give any importance to these things. If you are really educated, broad-minded and have a modern outlook you must go ahead and marry if the girl and boy are willing!

I also made an observation that Gouder is in the list of backward classes in Tamilnadu (see the page http://www.tn.gov.in/department/bclist.htm ) where as Nair is in forward class. But this may not be a clear indicater because social classification depends on the socio-economic status of correspondig states. So I am not sure about using the "forward - backward" classification in different states for a comparison.

KN,
For the sake of marriage why are you checking the Govt. list of classes, etc? Just go ahead and marry!. Tell SC of Malaysia that in India Gounders are backward and Nairs are forward even according to the Govt. May be in Malaysia, Gownders are forward!!!!

a) for love/marriage this should not be an issue
b) There are different type of gounders in TN, one vellala, there is also the vanniyar types who call themsevels goundans, vellala gounder is considered higher (sic) than vanniar
c) Nairs are in Kerala, Gounders are in TN, kind of hard to establish equivalency, dont you think. Nairs are mostly warriors/landowners (traditionally) yet, Nairs had the not so glorious tradition of "associations" with Namboodhiris which has no equivalency outside Kerala. Vellala Gounders were landowners/farm labourers traditionally, vanniars on the other hand were predominantly farm labourers although there were some landowners among them
d) Caste is crap, but to the question that the girl's parents want answered, you might want to show them the BC/FC list :)

I'm surprised! Are we in the 21st century or what.
Does all this community titles Nair, Gounder, Pillai,Menon etc make any difference. For gods sake I think we should stop this crab of isolating our people into communities with different grading and ranks. With the ever increasing mix marriages nowadays one can even identify to which community or clan one belongs to.

who are these gounders are anyway .They are a bunch of tribes who live in coimbatore. They are very stinchy and arrogant people who think they are one of those high classes.these are the same people who came from karnataka along with those who call themselves vannier. These people are jet black and they think they are the most fair.Mostly their wives must have slept with some of the brahmins who lived in their place.

I am a gounder guy married with Nair girl 25 years ago. I know both guys.
No caste is higher or lower. But for the way of living we can compare both Nair and Gounder as the same level. Because both of them are agriculturalist. Gounder (Kongu Vellalar) are added in the backward list during 1975 only. Forward, Backward and Most Backward lists are made with a census how many of them are educated, are in higher jobs etc... Now both of them are educated and you can see more Gounder guys in the software industry (check the Tamilmatrimony.com)if you didn't beleive it.

I am a Gounder from Fiji and think that different surnames do not make any difference to status in society. Indeed our surnames give us a unique identity but it does not matter much these days.

hello MR.oru nair
may be ur nair community is forward in kerala , but in tamilnadu , if u compare all caste with gounder , we allways stnd in a high status . all mallus are migrated from TN only .
even ur fore fore father may be a gounder . our community is considered as OBC because for reservations in goverment sector .
so what i say is NAIR <= Gounder.
and we are never behind u buddy
