Okay I'm a mallu and I never been to Tamil Nadu or anything and I was born in Kerala but I grew up in USA... and few weeks ago I found out that even though I can't speak tamil.. I can understand it.
I was working at this place(U don't need to know where) and this one guy(Indian, of course) comes up to check out something and his cell rings and he starts talking on it.. even though I didn't speak his language.. I could understand everything he was saying.. I could understand every other word and so on.
Tamil is a Dravidian language and Tamils are consideded Dravidians.. what about malayalees... are they Dravidian, too???

You know, I am very embarassed to see how Mallus fight with their own Tamil brothers, out of all South Indians...Mallus and Tamils are supposed to be the closest of South Indians, it is very shameful. Check out this link, maybe this is a good explanation.

Hi all:
I hold a view that may sound blasphemous. But nevertheless, I'd like to share without any malicious intent.
Of all communities that I have come across, Tamils indeed fare poor on looks. I am NOT talking of skin colour. I hold someone like Ranjitha more beautiful than Mamta Kulkarni.
When it comes to looks, one certainly does not talk of the best 5% or 10% of a given population, but what one encoutners in shops, buses, trains, theatre etc. And, I have no qualms in saying that the beauty quotient of TN does not stand upto what it could have.
In whatever little ways that I could analyse I find there is only one possible reason: Tamils marry within relations more than others, and this may perhaps be a reason why most offsprigns are deprived of lot of biological endowments. I can recall Parsi community here. They too are besotted with similar and more grave problems due to excessive inter-marrying. Sparing a few of them rest look and grow to 'less-than-expected' standards. Please ignore the exceptions in both cases (a la Persis Khambhatta or Hema Malini).
In S'pore there is not even Caste system followed among Tamils, leave alone marrying within family. Among the younger S'porean Tamil girls I see a marked change in their looks from their parents. Many of them look better than their couterparts in TN with better physical and facial features. Well, being a man I have had vested interest in observing women more! The same could be true for S'porean Tamil men.
My recipe for a better looking TN is: Widen the marriage net (like Tax net!) and chose a spouse else than a blood relation. And you'll see the difference in one generation. No more than that.
There are other good things that I observe in S'porean young Tamil girls. Unlike the relatively older women, there is no craving for powder and other white pastes to look fair. Perhaps, there are more dark skinned girls than ever before who have come to appreciate their beauty being aided by their skin colour than it being a liability. Healthy sign indeed, if it's true.

In the developed world, the merits of dark skin has been recognized. The darker the skin, the slower the aging. The whitest skin starts wrinkling even in the 20s. That is why they need make-up. The darker girls have realised their asset and are flaunting their healthy skin by avoiding making up.
The only exceptions I see are JJ and Sridevi. But perhaps they have face-lifts, who knows :-)

>>I have no ego<<
Raj,
I would take that as a compliment. If I have reached the level of spiritual growth where I have no ego, I will be happy.
In any case, the statements made by you that I pointed out have a correlation to the topic on hand and they are your statements, not my impression of who you are. Your statements attributed are just your opinion of me (I couldn't care less what you think of me) and secondly have no correlation to the current topic.
>>In the developed world...avoiding making up<<
Sugrutha,
So true! It looks like we do really come from an underdeveloped country and some of our men still have the slave mentality of admiring the beauty of their (or their forefathers') erstwhile white masters :) thus probably subsconsciously equating the looks to the power and wealth of these masters and are unable to see beyond that.

Sujata & Sugrutha:
That's (dark skin ages slow) a news to me though I have heard it's best to avoid skin cancer etc. Two more exceptions in that league could be Jayapradha and Dimple Kapadia !
But, do you differ with me on my observations. I have often found even well-educated Tamil friends not marrying from the confines of family and would be surprised about the multiple cases of 'under-weight' children etc. even among people who are economicaly well-off. I am stating this possible cause among Tamils regardless of caste. Every caste seem to indulge in marrying within family only the % varies.

Srini: good points, its good to see somebody here has the guts to go against the tide.
Sujata: I think you just misunderstood my comments, its understandable, no hard feelings.
Mani: thanx for the link, it was informative, but I heard dalitstan is some ISI site?

Srini,
The darker the skin, the slower the aging. While the brown skin ages slower than white skin, the black skin ages even more slowly than the brown skin. Here, in the US there are black women in their 50s and 60s who can easily pass for 30s, except that in the shorter of them the thickened waist is a give-away.

Sugrutha: Thanks for that info. Yes, part of the reason why I found some young Tamil girls in S'pore more appealing than their counterparts in Chennai is better physique including the waistline. I think this happens by peer(ehtnic) pressure as 95% Chinese women one gets to see in S'pore have impeccable hour-glass profile. So every girl is inspired to shed weight in wrong places. However, tragically though, many S'porean and Indian Tamil men are content being 'Thoppaisaamis" :-). I think most Indian men are rendering themselves undeserving of their women.(Is the last statement grammatically wrong?)

Srini,
I mentioned the thickened waists as a give-away of age - it is a post-menopausal symptom which shows more easily on shorter people than the taller. I was saying that but for that symptom, their faces alone would pass for a 30-year old's :-)

On the topic of wastlines, I really believe us men - at least most of us - are doing a pretty bad job of maintainig them. Many of my male college mates (in a ug engg. class) have developed a lot in the middle while none of the females do. Is this carefreeness justified when it comes to expecting a 'good-waisted' wife/girlfriend. Hey, now it dawns on me: None of the middle-developed guys found a gf!
