  A former Indian cricket player said on Wednesday that national coach Kapil Dev offered him a bribe to underplay during a 1994 match against Pakistan.
  "Either I or Kapil or God knows who is truthful," Veluppillai Prabhakaran said, placing his hand over his heart in the interview videotaped for a new Indian Internet web site, Tehelka.com.
  "If I don't take (give) this name, I will be lying," he said on the tape played for reporters.
  After the video tape was shown, Prabhakaran made a brief appearance to authenticate it.
  "I tried my level best. I went to the management," he told reporters. "They never helped me. What do you expect?"
  Prabhakaran has said for years that an Indian player had offered him a bribe to help throw the match against Pakistan. But he had refused to name the man, saying he had no legal proof and did not want to be sued for libel.
  Prabhakaran said on the tape that the bribe offered was 2.5 million rupees ($57 340).
  In the interview, taped on Tuesday, Prabhakaran names several former Indian captains and other players who were present or whom he said he told about the bribe offer. He said they all told him to forget about it and concentrate on the game.
  India's cricket authorities, who have said repeated investigations showed no match-fixing evidence among India's players, recently opened a new inquiry and offered Prabhakaran and others protection if they came forward.
  The inquiry was opened after New Delhi police charged South African captain Hansie Cronje and others with match-fixing related crimes.
  Prabhakaran made an appearance before the Indian cricket board, but the name of the man he accused was not made public until Wednesday night.
  Prabhakaran said in the interview that on the evening before the match he was shaving in his bathroom when his roommate, Navjot Singh Siddhu, came in and said: "Brother wants to talk to you. He has an offer."
  Prabhakaran said that Dev then came in asked him to underperform for 2.5 million rupees.
  "I started shouting, 'You are a traitor'." said Prabhakaran. "If you have to sell your country against Pakistan I'm not ready for this," he recalled saying.
  He said that wicketkeeper Nayan Mongia and roommate Prashant Vaidya were in the adjoining room and when they heard the shouting they rushed in. He said he told them what had happened and also told coach Ajit Wadekar, then-captain Mohammad Azharuddin and two TV commentators who are famous Indian cricketers - Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri.
