Did anyone watched "MAYA" by Digvijay Singh. This movie talks abt the nastiness dones in the name of culture. When Maya the main char reaches puberty, her life begins to change in more than one way. She has to be blessed at a public ceremony, money has to be spent for the event, dozens of family friends and relatives would be invited for a communal meal -- and inside the temple premises, the priests have sexual intercourse with Maya, one after another.
Only her cousin is shaken by her screams. Her parents and relatives carry on with feast and ceramony.
What do you people think abt puberty ceremony. How come men don't get the puberty ceremony as well?

As much as the "coming of age ceremony" is distatsleful, there are hundreds of other religious/cultural practices which again either don't make sense or are outrageous.
While we Indians generally boast to other people of our cultural superriority, the problem is, if we remove brick by brick these kind of rubbish practices, the hallowed monument of the so-called "Indian culture" quickly dissappears.

this is so embarrising for the girl! ive herd that the medicine man takes of all of the girls clothes and everyone admires her mateurness. then the lay her on a special woven rug and open her legs. the the madicine man takes a sample of her menstruation fluid. then everyone is let to bless her by touching her with clean fingers on her vagina! that is so perverted...how could they do that!!!

This movie really upset me. I started doing research and found confusion between this tradition and devadasis, that are in elegant words, prostitutes. I cannot understand the bottom line of how this could lead to a reasonable and human excuse or "sacred" purpose for this aberration. The most sickening part is to watch the parents practically enjoying it by feasting and announcing it to all public. What a disrrespect for a girl! What little dignity for their own blood! What kind of rights will she have in the future and how will she work out this trauma?
To me these called priests will go to hell.
