Thiru.Marius,
There is an interesting incident which happened in the life of Yogananda. Once in a function, he gave a flower vase as a gift to a person.
Immediately he was in tears and told that he approached Swami.Vivekananda for initiation. Vivekananda told that he is not the right person and he will meet his Guru later and that at the first meeting he will present him a Vase.

Hehe - yes I think I've heard that story :)
Isn't it also in Yoganandas' Autobiography?

Swami Vivekananda did not 'create' any philosophy of his own. Swamiji gave wide publicity to the age-old Indian Philosophy by travelling to many places in the world and talking about it. People started taking Indians seriously instead of imagining them as performing rope-tricks or as snake-charmers (as the colonialists portrayed Indians). All Indians must be indebted to Swamiji for this great service.

I dont think people all over the world take india seriously and their perception of snake charmers have reduced only due our software prowess. Again what is the essence age-old indian philosophy? If I am correct there are several 'age old philosophies' contradicting each other and having thier own way. Which of these did vivekananda support?

I think there may seem as there are many age old philosophes as you say, but there are just many ways to tell one and same ting. But as with anyting there are always charlatans trying to profitt from peoples spirituality. But you would know the difference between the true and the false if you compare their "teachings" with the teachings such great ones as Yogananda, Vivekananda, Sankara and Gaudapada.

I think Vivekananda championed service of God through man. he said , why built Ashrams and why go to temples, when you can serve the poor and the destitute. Vivekananda, the great monist believe that the one god is manifested throught man , but the manifestation was in different degrees and of cos he was a critique of the caste system . He also espoused that man should be strong and brave and cast of aspersions of being uworthy.
He was a people's saint or yogi.
jai Vivekananda.
