A very thought provoking subject, if you ask me. Actually these otherwise disjoint phenomenon are not that disjoint. It would be interesting to know the rise of percentage of people that now use Internet in their daily life. Lets say, for shopping, for booking tickets, for watching movies, for entertainment, for communication. I would say the consumer to business interaction has indeed grown as can be noted from the various sales margin in E-commerce Industries. Again communication has increases several times over via internet. I dont just mean chatting, but also teleconfencering etc. In a nutshell, more people either sit at home than they used to. Maybe this set was already a clan who sat at home watching T.V. But it is known for a fact that more children sit at home due to the influence of Internet. In India, we have cafe's providing internet. I may not entirely agree with the host about his opinions on the adverse effects. But there have been cases of prostitution in cyber cafe in Tamil Nadu. I dont know how far we can attribute those to Internet. But pornography is certainly not a factor to be discounted in these cases.
My conclusion is that it has had an impact on people and since people are very much related with pollution on this planet, it is indirectly causing an impact on the pollution.

Now one impact of internet would be virtual companies that does not have a physical existence but exists only online. The construction of say, book stores like Amazon and which traditionally requires a showroom of books and which may have practically contributed substantially to the pollution has been avoided because of internet. Here, we talk about water pollution, air pollution, soil pollution and noise pollution. Construction areas are a popular area for noise pollution. They are known to release wastes into the soil, some of which percolates into the ground water and cause water pollution. Even use of generators and thermal fuels may cause air pollution.
Then the actual buildings after being built completely, again contribute to congestion in urban areas (maybe) and further to pollution. Virtual shopping areas are more eco-friendly as noxious fumes emitted by vehicles can be avoided. We dont have to go there to select and all that. Everything can be done online. Friends and businessmen dont have to travel a long distance to have conferences or friendly chats. Cyber sex (as it is popularly called) at least doesnt transmit STD (thereby reducing fumes from ambulance or other vehicles)
