hi guys,
sorry for joining without any reference to any of the previous topics.
shakthi,
van, train dOnOn hi aatteen jaateen hain! magar pani tO aattaa hai.aatti nahin.there is particular rule to find out gender .you need to memorise.when you use english words in hindi , it is even more difficult to generalise.still...words ending with ing are feminine.e.g: winding,meeting,sitting,batting...words ending with r are generally masculine .e.g: rotor,matter,butter...family is fem but parivaar is masc.to the extent i know u can get this only by practice.
bagal is by the side.bagalmein hai can be used to indicate it is nearby.

paani aata hai?!!?
We generally say water as personification of women(ganga, sawaraswathi, cauvery to name a few!)
aur aap ne jo kaha, regarding 'ing' woh kaafi informative hai. Shayad baat karte karte aajegi.
magar, mein tho roz baat karti rehti hoon(aur meri accent bhi kaafi achi hai!). phir bhi yeh gender ka mamla hamesha confusing hai.
thx anyway.Ill remember this 'ing' and 'r' :)

>>>...family is fem but parivaar is masc<<<
that probably has a reason! Whilst family is taken care of by the woman (basically), the parivaar ka naam and credit always goes to a MAN.
huh! so much for a malechauvanistic world!

sorry shakthi! i have to call it shallow thinking! family is English and parivaar is Hindi.that's all.
ok.let's use the e-patra.com style. e.g: ¼-Ta,¾-ta,then the hindi letters with harder sound-Th,th etc.,

Namaste jii,
Main Hindi baashaa adyhaapak, hain, aur thoRa thoRa bol sakhta huun. Main angrezii hain, "phir bhii dil hai Hindustani"!
OK, I've probably confused everybody now, so I'll revert to English. As a new student of Hindi, I've been looking for somewhere to practice and, hopefully, get some tips and corrections. Is this the place?
I would very much appreciate anyone's help and advice.
Dhanyavaad.

Hi Tiruttakkan,
I am most grateful for your help. I noticed after I'd sent the first post that I'd made some grammatical errors and tried to stop them (hence the similar posts).
Thank you for pointing out the mistake with angrez. I am struggling a bit at the moment with postpositions (kaa, ke, kiii, thaa the, thii etc) and will get back to you very soon with some questions.
aapkaa grateful dost,
Ron

Hi guys,
I'm interested to know whether hindi and urdu have anything in common? Are they the same? If different, where are the difference? Please koi mujhe baatain.
- From: tiruttakkan (@ 210.212.92.100)
on: Wed Jun 16 23:30:50 EDT 2004
hi juhi,
hindi and urdu are not the same.the verbs are generally the same(bOlnaa,karnaa,sOnaa,maangnaa,marnaa,jeenaa...).
grammar is the same(may be different words are used to define each feature).if you say' mein bOloongi' -this is common to urdu and hindi.the difference lies in nouns like zindagi, mushkil, zaroorat, safar etc.,these are urdu words and their hindi equivalent are jeevan,kaThin,avashyaktaa,yaatraa...
for now ...bye!we can discuss more ,time permitting!

tk,
but dont u think, we use those urdu words in normal hindi conversation or dialect?
"zindagi ka mushkil savaal paisa kamaana"
"mujhe teri zaroorat" etc
I guess aavashyaktaa, katin, jeevan etc are heard only in serials like 'MAHABHARAT' etc..

To us all towns are one, all men our kin.
Life’s good not come from others’ gift, nor ill
Man’s pains and pain’s relief are from within.
Thus we have seen in visions of the wise.

meenanjali,
I can tell how I learnt. I learnt first through the book titled ‘ learn Hindi in 30 days’ (Balaji publications.National Integration Language series). This book is useful in initiating one . This book covers some common words and simple sentences.costs only 20 rupees. I have seen them in most of the book shops in Chennai and Delhi.
I learnt to read Hindi with the help of people around me and through the above book. You need someone to tell you how to pronounce the Hindi letters. You can practice reading with the above book itself.
Listening to Hindi songs and seeing Hindi movies helped. Should help you too.
For complex sentences, I used a book titled ‘ Rapidex speedily English speaking course-Hindi to English’(Dehati pustak bhndar,Delhi).Once you know to read Hindi, this book is very handy .

Take care of the gender's effect on the verbs. It is different from Tamil or English.
Finally if you want to LEARN TO speak, YOU HAVE TO SPEAK IN HINDI to someone who knows Hindi.nothing substitutes practice.
That much for now!
