It was to be expected that the systematic discrimination and the inequalities inflicted upon eastern Tamils by the Jaffna Tamils was bound to blow up one day. I had anticipated this inevitability, and the day of reckoning dawning upon the eastern Tamils. Not surprisingly, it has now come true.
As a Muslim from the East, I did not need a crystal ball to foresee this. During the heydays of unbridled power the Tamils were wielding in Lanka, most of the development work and money was channelled to the North; the Eastern Tamils were never the twin brothers, but more like the Harijans of India - a vote bank, who could be easily manipulated and exploited for political agendas, and satisfied with a few bones and crumbs thrown at them, but nothing more. As the northern Tamils massacred low caste Hindus who dared to enter the Hindu temple, eastern Tamils also had their limitations from the sanctum and sanctorum of the Jaffna Tamils. Even the flamboyant eastern politician, Raja Durai, came to the realization that there was room upstairs only for the Northern Tamils. The hegemony and discrimination was quite blatant, and I knew a time would come when the Eastern Tamils would realize the tyranny of the northerners, and revolt against them.
A report by the University Teachers For Human Rights states: " Before the 1940's, nearly all the fertile paddy land from Kalmunai to Panama, south of Pottuvil belonged to 20 Jaffna Tamil families, who employed largely Muslim labour. Muslims had a reputation for being hard working and reliable. There was hardly a Tamil mudalali of eastern origin.
In the course of these slow changes, the largest group in the local population, the native Tamils began to feel a class deprived on their own soil; Feelings of antagonism towards Jaffna Tamils--and Muslims slowly increased.
TO understand the context to these changes, in the 40's the important government positions in the East, such as doctors , engineers and civil servants, were held by Jaffna Tamils. They had their own tribal instincts and priorities. They used their influence in finding jobs for their folk in government service, and thought little about the land. The Jaffna Tamil elite saw their future and economic base in terms of education and government employment in all parts of the country. It was only when this perception was threatened that they gave thought to land, federalism and later separation".
(As for the eastern Muslims, the Jaffna Tamils were like millstones placed on their chests - Muslims could not aspire for higher education, government jobs or any other advancement; the Jaffna Tamils' strangulation on Muslims slackened only after great men like Dr. Badiuddin Mahmoud arrived in the political scene).
The hegemony of the Jaffna Tamil dominated LTTE on easterners is history repeating and the rebellion by eastern Tamils is also history repeating.
Now that the eastern Tamils have wizened up and broken away from the yokes of the LTTE, the Lankan government, the RTTE and the Muslims will have to play their cards wisely. How the breakaway Eastern faction RTTE behaves with the Muslims will be interesting to watch. LTTE's totalitarian and arrogant nature has frightened even some of my northern Tamil friends, who dread to live under LTTE rule, if ever it materializes. If the Eastern and Northern Tamils themselves cannot coexist, then one can argue, it would be impossible for Muslims and Sinhalese to put up with the LTTE.
The Eastern Tamils do not have the wherewithal the LTTE has, especially the huge sums of money the crime syndicate gets from prostitution, smuggling of drugs, weapons and immigrants, forgeries, counterfeighting, extortion and other gang related activities. Therefore, the RTTE needs to assess its ability to survive and hence, the need to establish good relations with its neighbours.
The Eastern Tamils must treat Muslims with respect and consider Muslimaspirations to live freely and with dignity. For Muslims of Lanka, an undivided nation is the best solution; or, a Lanka which is divided between North and the rest. East should never break away from the mainland.

In view of the latest developments in the North & East of Sri Lanka I wish to share parallel events that have taken place during the past two decades.
- LTTE has forcefully evacuated the Northern Muslims from their homeland.
- The renegade colonal Karuna has given 48 hours for the Jaffna Tamil businessmen to leave Batticaloa. All Jaffna undergraduates have left from the eastern University fearing repercussions.
- The late President J.R.Jayawardene invited IPKF to maintain peace in the North & East later IPKF turned their guns against LTTE and completely wrecked the peace in the region.
- Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe invited Norway to mediate with LTTE and granted unprecedented concessions to the rebels and their honeymoon with peace turns out to be detrimental for the LTTE where their comanders are turning against their leader and now the peace in the region is on the verge of collapse.
- LTTE has exterminated their rival rebel group, TELO: its leader Sabaratnem and all his fighters in order to maintain the hegemony of their authority.
-The ailing theoretician Anton Balasingam now sees that a powerful faction has grown within his own organisation and challenges his policy.
- TULF maintains the notion that the North-East merger is non-negotiable and the Muslimes are viewed as an obstacle to this aspiration.
- Now a son from their own soil has emerged from the powerful LTTE ranks to advocate separate administive structures for the North & East.
I couldn't help but ponder Allah's words to the following effect: "They plan and plot their strategy, Allah also devises his plans and Allah is best of all who plot."

Hello Nakeeb (or is this the original MMC):
Before people dance in delirium about Karuna's revolt, they should take a look at what really happened, as Taraki says in the Daily Mirror today.
Taraki himself is from the East and is well-connected to Tamil militant circles in both the North and East. I have met him here in the U.S. when he was visiting for a talk a few years back. He is simply the most perceptive journalist available from Sri Lanka on LTTE issues today, and I will take his word over scores of other journalists, whether Sri Lankan or Indian.
While the Karuna issue is a serious set back to the Tamil struggle and the future of peace talks, my opinion is that it will fizzle out and Karuna will be isolated eventually. The delirium in the South is premature.

Herr ETA,
"Taraki himself is from the East and is well-connected to Tamil militant circles in both the North and East."
I've already read this interesting article, and the other 'damage control' material circulated by the pro-LTTE bloc. None of them can answer this basic question of mine: why did Karuna's rebellion come as a complete surprise??? Why is it that right up until Thursday before last, Karuna was still the Boy Wonder of the LTTE, the 'new face' from the East who had won great accolades as a 'Sinhala Killer?'
"He is simply the most perceptive journalist available from Sri Lanka on LTTE issues today,"
Whoever Mr. D. Sivaram may or may not know, the truth is that NO ONE outside the LTTE really knows how the operation is run. He claims that the 'signs' of fissure had first started in October. If that is true, why didn't he write anything about this, being the 'independent,' 'free-lance' journalist committed to transparency and free inquiry he is??? I have absolutely no doubt that Mr. Taraki could've a subtle touch in the wording to give the false impression that there was no serious rift in the LTTE, but nevertheless would've demonstrated that Karuna's intentions were not unknown to all of us (most conspicuously, the expatriate suckers who pour their life savings towards this sort of fiasco without a clue as to what they're funding).
It is no secret that Mr. Taraki is just another well-spoken flunky of Mr. Prabhakaran (although a bit more polished than some of the other goons running around the Internet), and that his Tamilnet.com is a propaganda disseminator. Yet, even if his own mother was Prabhakaran's deputy, he would never have any sort of access to the LTTE's account books, because (surprise!) the LTTE is not a transparent organization. Thus there really is no way to confirm or dispute his story; we just have to trust his word (and I believe everything on Tamilnet is the truth and nothing but the truth).
On the other hand, when Karuna tells BBC that the Easterners are the Northerners' coolies, that the Easterners have to rough it in the trenches while their Northern leaders take vacations to Europe and drive fancy cars, he is saying something that anyone can observe. This is why the LTTE's propaganda machine including Taraki is going to fight a somewhat uphill battle against Karuna in the propaganda war. Sure, the expatriate community will never have sympathy for Karuna no matter what, because most of them are northern Vellalas who wouldn't like seeing their hometown boy (Prabhakaran) being dissed. Thus, there is no need to make any efforts to reassure them that everything is ok and Karuna, the Eastern 'porali' is nothing but a power-hungry, traitorous *rebel* (those last words must have quite a new meaning for you guys these days, eh??).
The challenge will be the propaganda war in Batticaloa. Despite Karuna's relative lack of resources and an intelligence network to facilitate counter-propaganda, no one can ignore the fact that he's a Hometown Favorite. This job is going to require quite a bit of resources, if the goal is to 'regain' Batticaloa and its 5000 cadres unscathed.
"While the Karuna issue is a serious set back to the Tamil struggle and the future of peace talks, my opinion is that it will fizzle out and Karuna will be isolated eventually. The delirium in the South is premature."
I would agree that some of the reaction from the Southern media has been rather silly, most especially some of the comments made by the JVP. I'm telling you, if you guys want to win your Eelam war, all you have to do is somehow get the JVP into power and they will utterly ruin the South. However, both the Pry Minister's and Chandrika's reactions have been restrained, which is good.
Yes, Karuna will not last very long. He simply does not have the resources to survive a feud with the National Leader. He is *already* isolated so there need be no talk of him *eventually* becoming isolated. I am guessing that the National Leader will try to arrange for one of Karuna's senior men to shoot him while he's looking the other way, and dispose of the other leaders in a similar manner. This way, the National Leader can reassure everyone that Karuna's betrayal did not match the true sentiments of the patriotic Easterners, who were forced through terror to follow along (ouch, those last few words must be hard for you guys to say aloud!). In the BEST CASE scenario, this will be accomplished before summer, so that Karuna will not become too entrenched.
If Karuna hasn't been dealt with by April, I would imagine that Chandrika will start talking tough to the National Leader if her party wins, like demanding that the LTTE actually contribute something positive to the peace process other than rearmament and political shootings. Since Prabhakaran is the type of person who doesn't react well to anyone questioning his way of doing things (and also looks with contempt at anyone trying to please or appease him), I suspect that this is how the current peace process will end. If relations with Karuna remain especially sour, the National Leader will have to fight the SLA without one of his top field commanders and his 5000 cadre (again, best case scenario.. I'll leave it to your imagination as to how it can become worse).

Hey, The breakup is a Setup by LTTE, buddies.
It is to Kill Chandrika and to put the blame on Karuna & escape. This is only way LTTE can
progress on peace since Sinhalese leadership is very adament to change & wants to get rid of Tamils.
