The origin of words, particularly English words fascinates me. For example, the English word CATAMARAN originates from the Tamil word ‘KATTUMARAM’. Kattumaram in Tamil mean a small boat made of wooden logs tied together with ropes. It is been used by Tamil Fishermen for generations with no modification except for a removable Engine, which the Fishermen have added to power their Kattumaram. Though Kattumarams are still primitive, the Catamarans assumed a new distinction as the tour operators call their Luxury liners as Catamarans.
I invite the forum members to share their knowledge on the interesting origins of other English words.

'Anaconda' again comes from India which means 'Elephant Killer'.
The slang 'S crew' comes from the shape of a pig's peni s which has veins running like threading along its length.
