It may be 40 millimeters long! (about 4 cm which itself is a big size considering it is an insect!)

Dave,
I know the insect you are talking about. In Tamil it is called "pon vaNdu". I dont know what is the name used by TN Tamilians but in Sri Lanka we call it "pon vaNdu". In my home town I have seen children keeping this "pon vaNdu" as pets. ( BTW,I was also one those who was crazy about this 'pon vaNdu' when I was small). It is usually kept in a glass bottle.
But as Ramdas says it cannot be 40cms but can be 4cm. I think it was a typo.

Hi,
Yes, it was a typing error. It should have read 4mm not 4cm, but at least it got a response from Tamil Nattan. Thanks Roshan for all that information, is it possible that you remember any variations of the species? I seem to remember some that were completely green and others with green bodies and brown wing covers. In the past I have heard them called by a name beggining with Bundu? Bunda? Something like that. Does this make sense to anyone?

Dave,
I shall try and get the information you required. But I have no clue about Bundu or Bunda? :-)

vandu=>bundu ?? remember anglo-indians love to mispronounce Tamil, perhaps to emphasise their anglo side :)

Oops! I've gone and done it again, put down the wrong size for the beetles. This is what comes of being in a rush.
The actual size I meant should be - 40mm or 4cm (about two inches)
The detergent bar that was mentioned, did it have an illustration of a beetle on the wrapper?

eee anglo-Indians have a unique history and a unique place in Indian history. They are not the same as mixed indians.

You said that Anglo Indians are not the same as Mixedrace Indians. True. But Anglo Indians are Mixedrace Indians...hence a part of a 'larger community'.It's like all Indians are Asians but not all Asians are Indian hehe
And I know the AngloIndiansclub ...I posted a message on there I think for my own group called 'Mixed Indians' which brings together the South Asian/White Mixedrace community.
