If you really think it is your "motherland" then you really do not need any info or warnings. When you were a child did you ever go to your mother's lap by somebody's guidance or info or warnings?. You just went to hug her with full confidence and trust.! Is it not? So just go to her like you go to your mother. She is sure to embrace you!

Jokes and philosophy apart. Some points to remember:
1. If you are a citizen of some other country carry a copy of your ID papers with you always.
Always get the telephone number and address of your country's consulate/embassy nearest.
2. Do not hesitate to go to the police if you have problems from rowdy elements.
3. Do not flaunt yourself that you are from some other country. If you look like an average Indian that would be ok to save you from fleecing.
4. Do not expect the same standards of cleanliness, orderliness, prompt-service, non-corruptive practices as in the country in you are living.
5. Do not carry too much cash with you. Most important towns and cities have atleast one ATM in the center of town. Traveller cheques issued by nationalised banks like State Bank of India are better if you want to carry a lot of money around. All places have a branch of SBI so encashing is not a problem.
6. Prefer to eat vegetarian food from restaurants as they are safer. Prefer to go to popular vegetarian restaurants.
7. Dress simply and modestly. If interested try to learn and dress like the locals. (Every 400 kilometers have slight differences in dressing in India which is one of the greatest cultures of the world!)
8. If you are visiting religious places and places or worship obey the rules and regulations of that place. People of other religions may not be allowed to most places of worship except churches.
9. Above all keep a modest outlook and respect everyone as India is democratic, secular country.
10. Prefer public transport as they are less expensive, safe and you can really can have a "feel of India" if you travel so.(unless you have a host to take you around in his vehicle).
11. Three star and lesser hotels are less expensive and again you can get a "feel of India" if you stay in them.
