Is she being treated fairly by India? Should she be deported to her homecountry? Can she get married to her boyfriend and live legally in India?

Hey Neel, how are you? It has been a while since you posted, or since I posted! Last time I recall, we were squabbling with "expat", but obviously he is gone, and this forum is more "calm" now!

Hi Mani,
I am fine. Nice to see you back. Mama and Elf have taken leave I believe (knock on wood). We better enjoy the calm while we can. You never know when they may return.

Neel,
Happy ending afterall. BTW did you see the movie "Not without my daughter' on Bravo ? Surprisingly I first saw this movie on Oman state television. It is the story of an American woman who is duped by her Iranian husband whom she met and married in the US, to visit his folks in Iran. Once in Iran, he tells her he has decided to settle down in Iran and that if she did not like it, she was free to return, but without their daughter. The story is about how she manages to escape (with her daughter) to Turkey and reach the US embassy there (US had closed down its ambassy in Iran by that time). It is based on a true story. There was a Tamil movie based on this story, I dont remember the name, the main actors were Prakashraj, Parthiban and Soundharya.

I am happy that things are good for Azmi, even after the Q embassy made a big fuss. I wish her the things move in the similar smooth fashion.
On the other hand, Sugrutha, do you think "Not without my daughter" as a good film. To be honest with you, I am a big fan of Sally Field (NOT only because I watch 'Norma Rae' over and over ;-)). However, I felt really embrassed seeing her in an one-D film like "Not without my daughter" [The other time, I feel odd seeing Field on her Ad for Stockbrokers. I always forgot that Field is NOT the real Rae :-((] To cut the commentary short, "Not withour my daughter" is "Black Hawk Down" and "We Were Soldiers" of its day. Pure exploitation of the contemporary mood, and a little bit racially motivated.

azhiyazhalan,
I definitely do not rate that movie as great cinema. Just that it sounded somewhat similar to the Kuwait girl's flight from a rigidly islamic country. That is all. It would have served as a warning for women married/engaged to immigrant men from such countries. Remember the Mohsin Khan-Reena Roy story, where Mohsin just took their daughter and fled to Pakistan where Reena could never hope to win custody of the girl ?
BTW, what does the handle/name mean ?

They should teach family planning in Kuwait. What was the Indian guy thinking, he could have been killed in a foreign land himself. Or worse still he would have stood by and watched his girl being stoned to death because he did not don a condom. At 28 yrs of age he should know better. This story could have turned out to be tragic because of irresponsible youngsters.

Sugrutha,
thanks for the clarification. Actually, I do not know about what Mohsin Khan-Reena Roy story was. However, in US, during the 15 min Elian fame, there were interviews with number of americans, who had similar situations. However, the victoms were from different backgrounds and religions, and from both sexes. You may remember about a Burma born Millionire Indian in US Vs. his american wife's hide-and-seek acts for the children. I think couple of years back, this issue (in general) came as the cover stories in different prominent US magazines. Of course, I agree the Islamic society in general has such rigid practice [Being a Saivite (NOT Hindu;-)) family born agnostic married to a muslim after experience this 'hardship, how come I can be with a negation;-)]
However, when I see what happens in Indian Hindu society, Orthodox Jewish society, polygamic Mormon society, and women-comes-second (in general) catholic society of Ireland (though the current UN official Mary Robinson was a Primier in Ireland, think about how the women are not allowed to even life threatening pragnancy urging abortion), I do not think this is only from the Islamic society. At the same time, in recent time when I see the Palastinian Muslims, I am surpried to see how much they are secular, and deviates from the patternes of a stereotyped Islamic society. [This is not to negate of what happens and happened in the other middle east countries and Afganistan; Recently I saw an interview in PBS by a Muslim Social Scientist with PHD in Purdue, who returned to Saudi Arabia and has become an Architect's second wife. Her thoughts give a mind of an western culture tasted woman's way of seeing her own culture]
BTW, 'azhiyazhalan' loosely means 'destroying fire'
azhi + azhalan

Azhalan,
That is a nice Tamil name. Thanks for explaining.
Yes. What you say is true. The victims of such domestic strifes are drawn for all sexes, nationalities and religions. This movie claims to be a true story and seems to capture one such situation. Perhaps the Iran-angle was very attractive to exploit in the 80s.
"Recently I saw an interview in PBS by a Muslim Social Scientist with PHD in Purdue, who returned to Saudi Arabia and has become an Architect's second wife. Her thoughts give a mind of an western culture tasted woman's way of seeing her own culture."
It would be interesting to know what she said. Perhaps she has personally been able to come to terms with it, her Islamic background need not be the main reason. There are Muslim women who do not tolerate their men taking second wives and there are christian and hindu women who are able to accept a second woman in their husband's lives.
