“Vietnam, where one out of two men smoke, is snuffing out smoking scenes in local films as part of a campaign against cigarettes.” – The Hindu(May 29, 2003)
Will the rest of the world follow suit?

*pagal nilavu - sathyaraj's character was amazing.*
Nothing worth mentioning besides that??? hmm;-))
*mouna raagam - psychological confronts between a couple.*
It was better demonstrated in iruvar uLLam. The infatuation between rev and karthik is worse than a high school girls's first crush on a street-smart student hero. Could not see the love there ;-(
*nayagan - the characterisation of the hero was very well built.*
Most of the credits KH gained should go to Marlan Brando and MR gained should go to Francis Ford Coppola and Mario Puzo
*agni natshathiram - again psychological confronts this time between pangaaLees.*
It justifies and insults our culture all over the world that "chinna vIdu" or having a second family in TN is not a big deal. What a shame ;-(
They should not be called *pangaaLis* anyway.

Smoking justified and Promoted by the great MR:
Watch alaipaayuthE:
His (madhavan) dad (natarajan) complains his wife that the saw his son was smoking (VERY CASUALLY).
The reponse by the son is: Yeah, big deal. Yes I was smoking- says to his dad!!!(Very Casually).
These are all happening in the family environment where children are playing around and overhearing the conversation.
I am sure Tobacco comapnies will be happy to give MR a crore for this commercial.

What ukw says is true! She has properly put forth the "moral (ir)responsibility" displayed by the so-called greats of the film industry. It is a pity most people dont see through such humbug!Film world is utterly callous & avaricious; more pernicious than the flesh trade!

- i didnt watch iruvar ullam... my point is, it was good in mouna raagam... and that is it. it is sad to note that the infatuation is more worse in reality, even before the release of mouna raagam...
// Most of the credits KH gained should go to Marlan Brando and MR gained should go to Francis Ford Coppola and Mario Puzo //
- sorry again. i didnt watch god father. ;-) nayagan was good.

-i dont think the chinna vIdu was justified in that movie. it was a story of a person who has chinna vIdu. where is the question of insulting here?
BTW, UKW,
i know you have talked enough on thalapathi. but i feel you missed out ithayaththai thirudathey and anjali... ;-))

- i saw, a father pouring drink for his son, in a hindi movie... it was in my school days... and the next one was "kathalan"
UKW,
i dont really understand why you care for moral irresponsibility and ethics only from MR movies. :-))and you yourself have also said in some other postings that movies are just for entertainment and not to teach morals and ethics.
no movies teach you morals and ethics. if you WANT to criticise, you can do it on any movie. just watch sun tv's super 10. they can even criticise oscar winning movies... :-))

**no movies teach you morals and ethics.**
Not true!
KaruththammA: Criticizes the killing of baby girls in the suburb of Madurai area and trying to tell ignorant people not to be STUPID and not to kill the baby girls who are going to save the future India. I dont know how many people got the message but I am sure at least few would have.
Thanga pathakkam: Kills his own son for the country. It is just a ficton but not an impossible thing when you happened to get a "scum" or "traitor" as your son!
Autograph: I thought it tells you that love or infatuation are not one's LIFE. They come and go in everyone's life. If they end tragically, dont worry, it is not the end of the world and there is lot more u could do in the future. Cheran has done a great job.
Please note, all the above-mentioned movies were entertaining as well as commercially successful as well.

In olden times also movies were good entertainers cast as a wholesome fare, dealing with a variety of subjects like patriotism("antha naal", "naam iruvar" etc), family sentiments, love, friendship( any number of gripping, imaginative, stirring films in this category) & so on. Vulgarity, if there was any, was like "URukaay", now the whole feast is made up of "URukaay"! Not only are they revolting, they are "dangerous"!

That is the audience wants.that's what the directors and producers can give . It's all commercial. It takes all types to make the world to say it in a cliched way .All you can do is to find ways and means to check your own young ones from getting addicted to the pulpism.
I doubt the trend can be reversed now.It will live its cycle an come back.Again another cycle.
The Indian society is now more open to discuss sex.Awareness is increasing . Taboos are rewritten.Personal freedoms are more and more emphasised.More rapes are reported and more rapists are punished.Women are able to stand up and slap bottom-pinchers.It is all a package deal.

Laws I believe should be made to ensure personal freedom more, rather than banning films like girlfriend.Ignore vulgarity if you don't lik it.
I don't see movies generally.Mostly I watch on TV.If I don't like it I switch it off.
I don't subscribe to the view that society is corrupted by these vulgar films. It is happening here and that is shown there.

The impact of what is seen on the big screen is very much more powerful on impressionable minds than can be imagined. A sort of silent sanction seems to be given to freakish, decadent trends & values. Much youth potential is wasted unnecessarily.
(Level-headed, sensible people dont frequent the theatres & quietly switch off the tv when anything disagreeable is shown!!!)

Something interesting in the issue of today’s “The Hindu”:
Smoking lies – for a cause
Stockholm,July 20. The Swedish organization, A Non Smoking Generation, has covered Stockholm in posters claiming that smoking stunts the growth of the male sexual organ and that cigarette filters are filled with mouse excrement, along with other lies aimed at getting kids to stop smoking.
“We wanted to raise awareness about how the tobacco industry always promotes its products – through lies,” the head of the organization, Anne-Therese Enarsson said.
“Our lies are so exaggerated that we hope they will make people stop and think, and then come to our website to find the truth,” she said.
Other lies plastered across the Swedish capital yesterday included that second-hand smoke is killing birds and that girls usually start smoking because they are stupid. -AFP
