Though the world exists for number of years and we are in 2004,Can any one tell why all the inventions are happening only in the recent centuries? Were the people lived earlier not brainy?

Inventions have been occurring all along and in all the centuries, starting from the stone ages. However, they are found to be in their zenith (so far) in the past few centuries.
Imagine a rolling snowball, gathering more and more snow, becoming bigger and bigger in size.
Now, for every 1 cm increase in the diameter, the incremental increase in the volume of the snow becomes greater and greater.
So is the case with the tremendous spurt in inventions, seen lately.

The discovery of Oil and electricity paved way for a number of inventions in the past 100 years.Without electricity and oil,the whole world would come to a stand still.Every invention depends upon some kind of power to run them.Oil and electricity provides that energy and power by serving as fuel and this led to various inventions in just one century.
