  No i never lived in srilanka, when i was a kid, my mom used to listen to radio and cook or work, so i got the habit of listening to music.
  
  ilangai vanoli nilayam was famous one we used to listen in chennai.
  
  Televsion i guess was first introduced around 1976 or 77
  
  we got one at home only by 1981
  
  lol so i was only listening to radios till then

  Yeah..its very sad.I read cheran's varigal:

  One of the worst losses for anyone could be the loss of 'sontha ooru'.
  
  Iused to read Exodus and used to feel for the Jews earlier.Now we are all in a way living as refugees, some forced, some out of choice, some for a livelihood! :(
  
  But if you see it deeply, as a villager, i have always felt like a refugee in chennai.Initial days i used to hate chennai and the ppl there.However any person feels out of place in tamilnadu if moved by even 50 kms.
  
  You will see a combatorian abusing thothookudi there..u will find a nasareth villager abusing chennai...u will find a theni fellow cursing panrutti...
  
  so being refugee isnt new to us....and if you see sangam agam poems, the palai(desert) themes are always based on moving away from the native places..Silappadikaram and manimekalai shows that the tamils travelled to far off isles for trade and commerce(i think they mightve been written some 1500 yrs back)...
  
  so again living as a refugee isnt new to us....but..hmmm :(
