India's Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued orders to ISPs in the country to block the url http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/kynhun, according to a government statement Monday. Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), which was set up in July 2003, and operates under the Union government’s Department of Information Technology (DoT), has blocked a resource on a Web site First time in India. Following the order from the DoT, Indian ISPs blocked the entire Yahoo Groups channel, as it was not found to be technically feasible to block only a single group, according to ISP sources.
Internet users are furious. They have says like “This is a violation of freedom of expression and sets a dangerous precedent of censorship and control over the Internet in India,”
Of course, just like any online censorship, this plan is backfiring in that it's drawing a hell of a lot more attention to this group than if they just left it alone - where it would have remained mostly ignored. Please have your says

I am really amazed at how ham handed the GOI can be ! Nobody had heard of this group and even cared to find out about this group that is supposed to be anti-national. In fact the act of blocking, in the bargain blocking an entire service fo Yahoo turned out to be counter productive. The group 'kynhun' got tremendous publicity. Isn't that stupid ? Also the vast majority of Indians are far removed from the goings on in the NorthEast of the country. For them it could very well be happening in another country for all they care.

I think more important here is the point that Yahoo decided to ignore a request by the Government of India. The right or wrong of Government asking Yahoo to do that is an entirely different question. Yahoo has definitely taken that whoz-this-third-world-guy-to-tell-me-this attitude. I am sure they won't do this if it was USA who made the request.

may be sajin, no idea why Yahoo declined to comply with the Indian govt request?! and the same time there is a question whether Indian govt requested or ordered yahoo to do so? No clear news, Yahoo simply says it is US based group, not appearing at yahoo india at any time. But it has the following terms in its privacy policy
"We respond to requests from any Indian or foreign government, security, defence, revenue, regulatory or other authority, agency or officer;
We respond to subpoenas, court orders or legal process; or
We find that your actions on our web sites violate the Yahoo! Terms of Service or any of our usage guidelines for specific products or services."
the termination law of yahoo says
13. TERMINATION
You agree that Yahoo, in its sole discretion, may terminate your password, account (or any part thereof) or use of the Service, and remove and discard any Content within the Service, for any reason, including, without limitation, for lack of use or if Yahoo believes that you have violated or acted inconsistently with the letter or spirit of the TOS. Yahoo may also in its sole discretion and at any time discontinue providing the Service, or any part thereof, with or without notice. You agree that any termination of your access to the Service under any provision of this TOS may be effected without prior notice, and acknowledge and agree that Yahoo may immediately deactivate or delete your account and all related information and files in your account and/or bar any further access to such files or the Service. Further, you agree that Yahoo shall not be liable to you or any third-party for any termination of your access to the Service.
wondering why they didnt in this case? Another wonder, dont we have enough technologies to block a single URL as our ISPs say? My feeling is Govt should have handled this matter in a different way rather than giving this much publicity to that Kynhun group.
