Did you look at the posting by robin about
"Saree philosophy- Sari drape an essence of South Indian culture". Check that out, that tells you how to wear a saree. And I think, its better to put pleats instead of leaving the mundanai as it would be a single line and the tummy might show.

Saree is a traditional dress and alongwith its beauty and charm also comes some problems. First wearing it takes longer time compared to other western dresses. There are also good chances that it can get loose and need to be redressed again to look proper.
Also women need to tuck in their handkerchiefs in their waist while wearing saree more like the vast majority of school girls do while they wear their skirts because of no pockets. I did it all my school life. They can carry their handbags but again it is an added discomfort.

Instead of wearing the saree like robin says, wearing it a little high on the waist will hide the tummy.
Wearing it below the navel, might make the tummy look much bigger.
