This is a profoundly tragic event for the whole of international space community, that the Space shuttle Colubia should have disintegrated and subsequently exploded while going through the Shuttle landing phase.
It is said that in the 42 years of NASA space programme history, it hasn't lost any crew member while rtrying to land, though NASA had lost some astronauts while take-off like the one happened with challenger back in 1986.
Its Very tragic for the indian community sice we were all proud of the acheivements of Kalpana Chawla, the first Indian woman astronaut. Her dreamy eyes and the elite poise she wears during her recorded interviews prior to this mission were evoking poignant and moist feelings.
She would remain a great symbol and role model for young indian women who aspire to go beyond the stars, both literally and as a metaphor.
This is a sad moment for all indians and for the people who believed that Humans are destined to reach far and beyond the stars and galaxies.
Let us send our deepest condolences and sympathies for the families of all the astronauts, who were in all perspectives were messengers and angels of Human development and persistence.

Its sad . In fact the other day i saw her picture on the front cover of India Today if i am not mistaken . She was our pride and lets hope that other indians can become astronauts like her instead of getting sucked into bollywood films.
Let the mission continue!

Yes it evoke a deep sense of loss and grief for everyone of us, to lose all those 7 wonderful people aboard columbia.
Strange, but we almost always 'miss' someone when they are gone forever, not realising their precious value, whence they walk amongst us. Kalpana Chawla was almost unsung in india, till her tragic demise.Except for people in the space technology, she was unknown and unsung as far as common people of india were concerned, which was probably a bit unfair.
She might evoke strong sense of conviction among young women of india specifically, and generally all third world women, who's position in society remain largely unsung and thankless.
I would like to that our multitude of female friends here, to write and share thgeir thoughts about what kalpana means/meant to them, and about her incredible journey from a non-descript small-town to the very frontiers of human endeavor.
There are our regulars like shakthi, fridge et al., and there are some missing females here, in recent times, like punnahai and sugrutha, especially sugrutha, i'd like you to write extensively here.
The loss is unfathomable, but those seven heroes would be remembered as the very epitome of human character to push the boundaries of our existence and knowledge.

They knew the danger and what they were up against.
It's a tragedy.
In future NASA must replace these shuttles with new types since this design is about 40 years old and this model is made to glid in to the earths Atmosphere and I think a ground controlled system reads the location of the craft as soon as it enters earth and lands Auto. No sensor no control that is a problem.
they need to install a Safety Crew cabin which wont Incinerate due to heat.
