In addition to the above response, oil your hair atleast twice a week. Better if you could leave it overnight.

Ooops missed an important point, do not expose your hair to strong sunlight.

This is a trick I learned long ago when I had very long hair, past my waist. Get a pair of small, very sharp scissors. Part your hair in half from the back and bring it all forward. Grab a hank of hair, maybe about an inch or two across and twist it, if you look carefully you'll see the little split ends sticking up along the length of the twisted strand. Holding the scissors very close to the twisted strand of hair, clip parallel to the twisted strand, just snip off the tiny splits. Then put a very good conditioner on your hair and leave it for awhile, say 20 minutes and wash it. This is very tedious but it does work. If it is very bad across the very ends, just have one or two inches removed from the bottom also.

Dear ?,
WOW!! I too have done this trick, but it is a time consuming job. It is easy only when a particular/small part of your hair has split ends. If the whole hair is affected then there's no way other than trimming.
But oiling, trimming once in 3 or 4 months, using a good shampoo and conditioner, not exposing your hair to strong sun light has helped me prevent from split ends. But if a small part of your hair is affected your trick is definetely worth following :)

It is a time-consuming job but before you know it, you will see no split ends. Don't try to do all your hair at once, just do it once or twice a week or more if you have the time. I used to sit on our back porch, in the shade and trim, it was very relaxing, almost zen-like.
