My partner is Tamil and we are expecting our first baby in July. We are looking for a Tamil first name.
Is there a good Tamil dictionary of names available on the web?
And I wanted to know what the Tamil word is for Violin (or equivalent) since I am a violinist!
Thanks,
Martin

Martin,
Its good to know bout ur baby, congrats
Well since, violin is an instrument introdcued from europe, we dont have ( I think so) equivalent tamil word here. We tend to address it violin. But there are other string instruments in India which was and is in vogue, and can be used for christening female child.(Raags or Instruments are i believe mostly used to christen female child)
Sitara
Veena
are some i can remember now.
All the best, for a healthy beautiful baby.
regards,
Shakthi

None of the above are strict tamil words,
i think an instrument called
Yaazhi
in tamilnad, and is a tamil word.
But not the name is a rare unique one, not christened by many. You sure can go ahead
(its ur choice)

Hello,
The name is not Yaazhi - Yaazhi means a creature like dragon. Sculptures of Yaazhi can be found in our temples. The string instrument you write about is Yaazh. YaazhpAnam gets its name from this musical instrument (pAnar = musician, pAnam = the art of creating music or the mastery over music...).
A few sentences about the Yaazh can be found in:

There are names like Vinaayakam, VignEswaran, vENugOpaal, VinOd, VenkatEsh, VenkatEswaran, Vaidhyalingam, Vaidhyanaathan, Vaidheeswaran, Vinay etc.
I do not know whether you want a name that is "thooya thamizh". If so, all of the above will not be suitable.
Vaiyaapuri, Valampuri, VaLavan, Vallavan, VeLLaiyappan etc are thooya tamizh names. Also I dont know whether you want names that do not indicate any religion. If so, 'VeLLaiyappa Raj' is a good name. Names like 'VaLavan Raj' do not exist already, so may not be liked by others.

I dont know about Srilankan cities very much. So if you have a city that begins with 'V' you can use it with Raj. I think you have some city called Vanuviya, or Vanvetti, or Vanni theevu. In that case he can be called as 'Vanuviya Raj'
