Joseph Heller

He started his literary life with Catch -22 which took him 8 years to complete and has been regarded as one of the best fiction works in modern literature. He went on to pen great novels like 'God Knows', 'Something Happened' and others. I'm looking for others' views on his works. Be forthcoming.

haha this is funny....whoever created this site was hoping that there would be thought provoking discussion....instead it's filled with a bunch of whining high school students who can't finish papers...it's sad that such an amazing book can be hated so much simply because these students are under so much stress from their schools...possibly the educational system needs reform...a good satire should do the job

Something Happened is a damn good book. I had to read it for school. Reading it isn't a pain, and neither is enjoying, but having to write is. For my paper I have to read three novels of his (I chose C22, SomethingHappened, and Portrait), and then construct a 15-20 page analysis and comparison of the novels. ARGH! Oh well, school is almost over!
PS I chose quotes from each novel to include in my paper that have cursewords (F*ck, t*ts, sh*t, d*mn, and also blow job are in my paper).

kannan, you might also try picture this & as good as gold.picture this is especially exasperating at times you feel like tearing the book at others u burst out laughing with all its rough edges it is good.
Heller also wrote a sequel to catch 22 before his death.i forgot the name. ihaven't read it. i couldn't think of an aged Yossarian.
Does anybody have info on that novel.

I thought the book was good----not great....and since people try to label it as great, i think it is overrated. It has some message, and it is pretty funny, but it's not as good as critics claim it is....at least not in my opinion. I thought the funniest thing about it (i read it three years ago) was that Milo bombed his own bases. I know this didn't help anyone, but i figured i'd write anyways.

VENGAYAM,
OH YEAH, THE SEQUEL......yes, the book is okay, but not as good as Catch 22. The name of the book is Closing Time. Yossarian is older in this one, in his 60's....and it is set in New York. It's pretty funny, and I think if you like Catch 22, you'd like this too. It's not as good, but sequels rarely are. It basically is on the same lines as Catch 22, so anyways I hope I've helped you out somewhat. Later. Jay.

What does this statement mean?
"Like all great leaders in democracies proudest of freedom of expression, Percles was intolerant of written criticism. Had there been a press, he would have excoriated it."
This is a quote from Joseph Heller's book Picture This. I cannot find this. Please help

john, portrait of an artist as an old man is hardly a biography of heller's life. i just read it and it is more a semi-ficticious version of his older life. it has nothing to do with the bulk of his life. I think people could find more information in "Now and Then: From Coney Island to Here". That is more his autobiography. Or just search his name and the word biography on the internet, since there's like 800 sites that say his backround info.

Im writing a canon on Heller, and I can't even find adequate criticism on any of his novels other than "Catch-22". It's 1:28 a.m. and i have about 4 more pages to write on this talentless cynic. I thuroughly enjoyed Catch-22, but his other books make my blood boil. Listless in San Diego my friends.

Wow. If you guys hate the book that much then just dont do the assignment. No one is holding a knife to your throat. So you'll loose some marks, so what, at least it'll save you (and us) all this angst on public boards. That or maybe you can try a little harder, say going to a "library" instead of spending one measely evening on your paper or whatever you're doing. Personally i find Catch-22 to be one of the most thought provoking books i've ever read, it manages to be horriflying and hilarious all at the same time. His writing is so realistic often to the point of being grotestque, especially in his character descriptions. If you can't appreciate his writing then put down the book or suck it up and just DO the assignment, it only gets harder.

I also have to do a autobiographical analysis comparing Joseph Heller's life to his novel, Catch-22. I can find plenty of criticism on the novel, and info on Heller's life, but am having trouble linking the two. Any good websites would be appreciated. I found the novel confusing because the evetns were out of sequence and it seemed as if all the characters had the same personality, ehich was frusterating and made the book less interesting, althoguh there were always crazy things happening to keep me awake

I have to do an author project on J. Heller. 3 essays, 1 bio, 1 critical analysis, 1 universal theme. it really sux a fatty. the book is awesome but when you have to analyze it to death it just takes something away from it. Donchya think??

Hey, y'all. This is my first time on this site, so maybe I'm a little behind on the information. I was just wondering if anyone has any information on Orr in Catch-22. I'm writing a paper about Orr being the hero and how he breaks the archetype of the hero. Any ideas?

Orr the hero...maybe you could say something like instead of fighting his battles, he runs away from them. It sounds cowardly, but maybe the picture of corwardice Americans have painted isn't supposed to be bad. Maybe cowardice can be good; you don't get hurt. Besides, getting away from war is what Catch-22 is all about! Whether it be by escape or by fufilling your expected "duties". I know I was kind of late, but maybe it offered a little belated insight.
