Hi. I am a college grad, and am planning to script a play based on Salil Chowdary's short story entitled 'The Dressing Table'. The legendary film director Hrishikesh Mukherjee wanted to film this idea himself. However, I have no information on the short story...no details about the author himself. Can you please help me out? I will be grateful if you could. I would also be grateful if you could reply as soon as possible, and also suggest a few other links in order to obtain the much-coveted short story. My email address is bhanuswetha@hotmail.com.If anybody could help me out, I would be extremely grateful. I have contacted so many people about this, but if someone does come to my rescue, I will be tremendously impressed and extremely grateful. Please do let me know on this one.

swetha: watch your words. just find out what kind of a person one is who says "I have no information on the short story...no details about the author himself" and calls someone who is very knowledgeable in indian music and musicians "you ignoramous". is this person the epitome of knowledge or wisdom incarnate?

Well...let me tell YOU something. You seem to know so much on him...how come you never knew he wrote a few short stories? Now...I DID. And they aren't released, which is why no one could have read them. Their rights are maintained by his family. That makes me nothing close to an ignoramus.

dear swetha and arul,
did both of you ignoramuses (sorry, couldn't resist!) know that satayjit ray once wrote a short
story about aliens landing in a lotus pond and how
all the lotuses bloomed suddenly. this was in the
sixties and much later when steven spielberg made
his hollywood blockbuster ET there was much mudslinging about plagiarism. ray being who he is, didn't make too much of a fuss and american money power and hollywood brashness won the day.
there is another ghost story by satayjit ray that
is, to me, one of the ten best (scariest!) that I have ever come across. if you both promise not
to call each other names, i may even tell you the story one of these days.
yours knowledgeably!

Hi Shekar.
It is very nice of u to enlighten us so.
As far as I am concerned, I am extremely open to literature. It is my favourite subject. And isn't it cool that the West needs to borrow ideas from us?
And yes, maybe my reply to Arul was a bit reactionary.
Anyways, where r u from? Chennai? I'd love to hear about those short stories. And yes...I promise to use no more names on Arul. I am a writer myself, and love to broaden my experience.

Dear Swetha,
Yeah, it's real cool about the West borrowing ideas from us. They started quite some time ago. With the idea of zero! Thence the clever answer to the question "what is India's contribution to human knowledge ?" Answer - "zero"!
I'm from Chennai? well, yes and no! About literature, this is what Ezra Pound said " Literature is news that stays news".
About Ray's story, I think it may be too long to impose on everyone on this forum. Tell me if I can email it to you. Where can can I get to read your writing?
Good luck with your project.

Hi Arul,
AS "someone who is very knowledgeable in Indian music and musicians", perhaps you have the answer to this one. What's the connection 'tween Salil Chowdary and Ritwik(enfant terrible)Ghatak.

Hey this posting is wonderful but i feel that the htread is lost in the chat.I am a great fan of salil's music and also know that he had written quite a few scripts like do beegha zamin and all the lyrics for his bengali songs have been written by him.But him writing a short story and that too not yet published is news to me.
May be shwets u can consult sanjay and antara salil chowdhury for the rights of this story ;-)..

Hi Raghu,
The original script idea and, if I am not mistaken, the screenplay too, for the film "Madhumati" was written by Ritwik Ghatak. Of course, the music(including what is arguably one of India's most well known film songs - aajaare main toh) was by Salilda.
Anymore such trivia, anyone?

Hey curious, hold on!!wasnt the script of madhumathi and do beegha zamin written by salil Himself ? I am sure do beegha zamin was by salil only but madhumathi i am not sure.i think it is salil only!!
Rithwik ghatak wrote script for madhumathi ????
Yaar thatz a great piecxe of news,if it is true!!

Hi everyone out there, Salilda did not do the script for Madhumati. Yes, he is very much a writer, known for his lyrical poems.
That part about his `unpublished` and `unread` story sounds like a lot of bull...

Hello Praveen.
It is not 'bull', my dear. Because it is unpublished, u need not have heard of it.
I talked to Mr.Hrishikesh Mukherjee myself about the story. He wants to make it into a movie, but the rights are with Antara Chowdhary.
Go revamp your SC Trivia.

hi friends
It's mahendra from belgaum(Karnataka).I'm an engg student & an ardent fan of Hrihida's.I've greatbrespect for him & never miss an opportunity to watch his films. He's one of the best film makers India has ever produnced
his stories are so simple & characters so unassuming(real). This trait of his films make them classics htough I've very limited knowledge about Hrishida,Salil Choudhary,Bimal Roy et al
I would like to share with you people .I hope it'll expand my horizon of knowledgr also.

Hi Swetha, why all this fuss about a short story of salilda which was not published? It reminds me of the blind person searching in a dark room for a black cat which is not there!
