Children should not be taught but shown. Children do not do what they hear but what they learn. If children have to develop reading habits parents should read. After marriage I introduced my wife to reading. before going to bed we read for half an hour to one hour. Only if parents do children follow.

I feel reading habit should be inculcated at a very young age. I started buying books for my son when he was 1 year old. Of course, those were just books with pictures. Slowly, at the age of 2, he graduated to books with pictures and captions and now at 3 1/2, he can understand a full story, if I just read it to him.
Most of my gifts to him has been books, and now he has more than 100 books. Every day, bed time starts with 1/2 hr story time.
Of course, he has his quota of TV and playing with toys too. So it is not difficult to cultivate the interest in books even in this TV age. It is all up to the parents how they do it.
This is my experience.

I work for a public library in Texas and when it comes to kids and reading, it depends (a) 0n the parents and (b)environment. If both parents and brothers/sisters are avid readers, chances are good the younger ones will be too. If the home has lots of books or other reading matter, the seed is planted.
Television, like soft drinks and junk food are a part of our lives, but if you moniter it, the hours spent staring at the "idiot box" will diminish on it's own.
But, if kids are FORCED to read books, especially books beyond their age level, it puts them off. Some books are especially daunting to younger kids. Plop a thick book (especially one with complicated language, words, etc) in front of a kid and tell them "read that" and you are doomed.
By all means ENCOURAGE your kids to read anything and everything,(within reason of course) but don't "beat them over the head" with it. Comic books are reading material. Even cereal boxes have reading material. The comics in the newspaper are reading material.
Ask your kids to read to YOU and TALK about what what they just read. Close the communication with your kids and you close their minds.

A parent has a big responsibility of helping children develop reading habits at an early age.I grew up seeing my father devoting good time to reading books, magazines, novels and newspapers. He also used to gather us in the evening and read to us interesting stories. It helped me a lot to love reading and develop reading habits. My love for books lead me to like their preservation and organisation. My interest for books lead me to doing a degree course in Library Science.I am now a university Librarian of Aga Khan University in Uganda.

Development of reading habits among the children the teachers also have an equal responsibility. In a country like India where most parents are illitarate and uneducated they can't encourage their wards' reading habits. As such in sucu cases, much responsibility lies with the teachers.

Hi, I'm a full-time mum who lends time to the PTA of my son's primary school to improve things at his library. Lately over the last 30 odd years, Malaysia had neglected the use of English as a medium of instruction in our schools. Consequently, the backlash is an erosion of the reading habit since ironically the Malay language hasn't got that wide a vocabulary or reading material of its own. It's sad but parents like me try hard to make libraries as interesting places to activate. If anyone has any suggestions to make the libray a fun place for kids, I'm all eyes and ears!!
Appreciate it, thanks!

Televison had not only made them more informative, but have made them more inactive. One generation back, we used to see lots of kids playing all sorts of games, these kept them active and healthy. Now that it is hard to find any kid playing. Even they play they play on the higly projected "Cricket" .
Coming to Reading habits, it is the responsibility of each and every person to cultivate reading habits for the kids. Parents should be the leaders in this. Next comes the teachers in showing them, how reading habits could change their thoughts and lifestlye. All of us should make an habit of presenting books for special occasions.

i thought it was just a very bored topic
cause in my country the reading habit among collegers are not that good
i cant even see them read novel or newspapers
maybe 40 ppl only 2-3 will buy newspapers to read
if said that reading habit must start from the babies or children
how about the student already grow up and already have "play game habit"?

I had a dream, I had a wish
I wanna see the whole world
I told my pa, I told my ma
But no money was there to be spared.
I read books, I read mags,
I saw not only the world,
i saw the entire universe,
with only a little money spared.
