Appetizer - Medu vada
Sweet - Kesari

I thought it was traditional to make "pongal" (sakkarai pongal, ven pongal, etc.) as the main course during such events.

Hey
I think these will form a main course only for the festival pongal. No idea as such.

I am a brahmin and we used to make some curry, without onion(like beans) thair pachadi, mango pachadi by adding neem flower(on new year, u should taste all kinds like sweet, sour and bitter-in life, we all have to face all kinds of worries and happiness, that is the meaning), appalam, vada, poli, payasam(semia is not advisable for any occasions like pongal or tamil new year), more kuzhambu, rasam. that is all.
