South Indians usually tend to eat rice. We also fry ingredients for most foods. Just how does one escape putting on weight. I have decided to go to the gym but am not sure what to eat and what not cut the fat. Anyone have any suggestions?

the first and foremost thing is to 'cut the coconut'. coconut plays a vital role in S.Indian cooking and it is a big culprit for putting on weight.
It also helps to cut down on rice and eat rotis.
hope this helps

White rice is the killer. Has anyone tried brown rice, wild rice with our regular sambhar and rasam.

hai all,
U can try taking boiled vegetables.. hope immediatly u cannot skip the oily foods..
U can prepare koottus, poriyals with less oil and have vegetables a lot with less rice ..
have chapathi or rotis in the night..with vegetables.. and don't go for dal varieties..
Have aval as ur breakfast... please don't skip ur breakfast.. because for some people.. it's the reason for the increase of weight..
Hope u can try this.. I reduced 5 pounds in 2 months.. hope its good reduction for me.

hi nandhini,
my name is kris k. i'am a personal fitness trainer in toronto, Canada. Sounds like u enjoy rice so inorder to keep the weight off and enjoy rice is try to eat the rice two b4r ur most active part of the day. because as u know rice contain alot of CARBS. so if u don't use that enery it will store as fat. KEY TO KEEP THE WEIGHT OFF IS INCREASE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY INTO YOUR DAILY LIFE. SO U CAN ENJOY UR FAVOURITE FOODS. THX

That is true..I studied in an article that whatever food either rice or wheat, after dinner or lunch, should do some physical work instead of sitting particularly in the night to burn the fat. Before u go to bed, the stomach should be atleast 50 % empty.
Other than that, exericse for 15 mts, stairs climbing, walking for 30 mts etc. are more than enough to reduce the weight even though u take correct amount of rice or coconut whatever.
Before taking ur food, have either some water or fruit or plain salad to avoid excessive amount of rice.
Rice or coconut are not only the enemies, main thing is junk food like chocolate, cookies, sweets etc. Once in a while, have them with only limited qty.
From my experience, I followed all these methods(doing exericse or walking is difficult everyday, still, no other way) and reduced weight gradually without any problem.

here is what I do: Have your bigger meals earlier in the day. Eat the smallest meal at night.
Eat brown rice. The way to cook this is by mixing with regular rice 50-50% and pressure cook. Electric cooker does NOT cook this well.
Increase protein content in your food like dal, tofu etc.
Eat chapatis if you can.
Eat brown breads instead of white breads, eat whole wheat pasta etc.
Eat more antioxidant rich foods (red grapes, tomatoes, oranges etc)
Drink 8-10 glasses of water every day.
Excercise as much as you can.
Eat one multivitamin supplement and a C vitamin supplement every day.
Use Olive or Canola oils only to cook.
Cut down sugar in your coffee.
Remember 3500 calories = 1 pound of weight. So, if you create a calorie deficit of 100 calories a day, you will lose a pound in a month.
I gained 25lbs over a 3 year period on my wiry frame. I have now knocked off 20lbs in 4 months following the above simple rules.
If you need specifics, let me know.
Good luck.

This is the diet i follow and i should say its very successful(our body constitution differs from one to other so what works for me might not work for you but its worth a try if you are interested)
Breakfast:
Oatmeal(regular flavor as it has less sugar and sodium) with skim milk. I add few pieces of sliced almonds to this as almonds helps maintain cholestrol level and also adds protein
one banana and a glass of orange juice.(Best if you can squeeze it fresh and drink without adding sugar)
Lunch - 3 whole wheat chappatis(made without oil/butter) and a big serving of cooked vegetables with dal(kootu made with lots of dal..avoid potatoes.,try to use more green veggies and tofu).
few pieces of grapes/melons
I take an apple in between lunch and dinner.
Dinner(i have dinner around 6.30 pm): 6 slices of toasted whole wheat bread with stuffed veggies(again i use lots of tofu for protein).
A big glass of buttermilk.
One fresh orange.
I do not eat anything solid after 7 pm. If i feel hungry before bed time i drink a glass of warm milk(skim milk) without sugar.
I drink atleast 8-10 glasses of water per day.
Apart from diet i also work out regularly(stair master/weights).
If you have craving for a snack or rice, do eat them once in a while but with limitation.

Hi,
I work and usually I feel hungry around 3.00 - 3.30 pm after lunch.
I try to snack on some fruits, but the after reaching home at 7.00 I end up having biscuits or some snacks with tea. This ruins my appetite for dinner.
I have put on 2 pounds in the last 4 months and now I am unable to lose them.
Also, in North East US, it is so cold, that walking or any outdoor activity is out of the question.
HOw do people in such cold places exercise? Even if I join a gym, I can workout only on weekends. Will that be enough?

you could try skipping. If you could afford space and money, you could buy a thread mill or
If you have a mall closeby your home or work, you could do your walking there.

Hi, I'm a Physiotherapist here in a small but beautiful country of Slovenia. It is simple u've to lessen the input of the calories and use or burn more calories then usuall and after some time once your body metabolisem gets adjusted to this it will start loosing the weight as in the begining for few days u will not loose weight so don't give up. The key is our food of course. No one is asking u to fast but if u keep fast according to the moon phases u will see the results soon. U know we in India woman keep fasts according to Purnima or Amavasya and u will instatntly loose one kg ont hat day if u stay only on liquids or fruits (no banana but sour or citrus fruits. the food what we eat in India is appropriate for that climate and our life style is also different. So if u lessen rice or any other carbohydrate from your lunch and ELIMINATE rice or any other carbohydrates from your dinner u will loose the weight. For breakfast I think u can go fro some carbs as they are the source of energy and it is ok if u take them in the morning as pshychologically they will keep u go on during the day. Each body reacts differently so don't give up and discipline your diat habits and it will be also helpful for your family. Have more whole wheat chapatis and less rice. it is not difficult it just needs some disciplin. and of course some regular physical activity atleast 3 times per week...it will make u feel good also go for some aerobics or cycling or swimming or also for walks. I also live in cold country and outdoor activities are possible only in summers but all u have to do is to do something for your body and be physically active. In winter also u can go for indoor activities like tennis or swimming or gym or aerobics or finally the cheapest is only 15-20 min walk in fresh air or trek. We indians are usually lareless for our body and cause of our sedentary life outside india makes us prone to different diseases of western world...so I admire all of u as u're coinciouse for your body all u have to do is to is organise your shedule properly and keep on going with work and life....Good Luck.

Hi everyone,
There's other ways of losing weight too,i control food by taking less rice & more veg.If some of us really don't take veg.or can't reduce the rice level; you can try taking your dinner early. Than drink fruit juice of[ 1 GREEN APPLE & 2 KIWI{green in inside} in the morning. These combination will make to 1 glass of juice.I have try this before and reduced my weight alot.Even for those who have high cholestrol can try this. This method really did work for cutting the fats.

Nearly every response has rightly said that rice is the main culprit. Another equally important factor which promotes weight gain is the habit of eating leftovers.
It has been a practice with the ladies of my relations & household (aunts, grandma, even my mother) to gobble up the day's leftovers after dinner; only a small cup of food remains anyway; as it is not sufficient to be refrigerated for the next day's meal they 'finish it off' today itself. Usually it is "I've paid so much for this dal/egg/whatever" or "this pineapple/cream (used for dessert) is so expensive I shouldn't 'Waste' it.....";so what has to go to the bin goes to their tummy!! They've justified their purchase/money by consuming it totally! These small extras every night add up alarmingly to their weight & increase damage to their shape as well as self-esteem.
This ridiculous attitude is STILL present in the homes of a few of my friends(North Indian too) & cousins and sadly their kids are also affected by eating more than they actually need.
My strong feeling is that whatever the type of cooking, the AMOUNT we eat matters more. It is also argued that South Indian actresses are not as fit or have a well-maintained body like their Bollywood counterparts; but Vyjayanthimala, Rekha, Hemamalini, Sridevi are still gorgeous, fit & South Indian too.....

Rice is not at all fattening, infact it is a vital staple food. The problem is that South Indians tend to have to mix a large amount of rice with a very little Sambar or side dish to be able to pick it up properly. Try using a spoon and fork and you will find you dont need to mix so much rice! Also dont take a rice meal in the middle of the day. It kills all the appetite for the evening and then you just cant gage how much to eat in the evening meals.
